Recommend this to anyone raising a human! Or working with families and little humans!

Fabulous book for all of us to read! Dr. Greene presents everything so clearly and in a practical, easy to follow manner. Having read many of his books in the past, I did miss reading about more of the science behind his techniques, but I realize this book is perfect for the intended audience. I'm thankful to be able to put his ideas easily into practice (easily may be putting it too easy) and to be able to share this book as a resource for the many families we work with in our autism center. This book is not geared toward children with any sort of diagnosis, but can just as easily be used with those types of kids. Love a book that is written to address a diverse population. Thank you, Dr. Greene. I admire your commitment to this field and am forever thankful for your sound, practical, effective advice.

Alright Stop, Collaborate and Listen...

Who woulda thunk it? Vanilla Ice was actually on to something...only instead of music, it was parenting! This is the best, and most logical approach to parenting I've ever read...and the basics agree with me on a deeper human level...so I am so pleased to have found this gem! The process works well beyond parenting...and can inform any dust up life throws our way...so I can't recommend this tremendous book any higher! The best of the best!

Wonderful

Put simply, this book gives a clear take on a simple process that will be challenging to implement due to past conditioning and experience. But it's worth it. I've already been pleasantly surprised by how my two year-old has responded, even offering her own solutions for problems at times. The methods won't be easy but they are clear and have real value.

not particularly compelling as stories, but interesting as historical record--wanted more analysis

In the early history of comic books, Fiction House was well known for its “headlight comics,” so named for the focus on buxom half-dressed females. Though the publisher spanned various genres, including jungle stories, aviator adventure tales, and space opera, as the title implies, Ghosts and Girls of Fiction House!, edited by Michael Price,vfocuses on their supernatural stories, in particular a long-running series entitled “The Ghost Gallery by Drew Murdoch” (Murdoch is the private eye narrator, not the actual author), which ran for 126 issues before evolving into Ghost Comics in the 50s.

This volume opens with a very brief introduction by Craig Yoe, in which he recounts an early bonanza purchase of old comics as an adolescent — his first introduction to Fiction Houses’ Jumbo Comics. After recounting his purchase and discovery, he offers a quick few lines from famed anti-comic crusader Dr. Fredric Wertham about the Fiction House line of stories, none of which, you won’t be surprised to hear, were at all positive.

A second introduction delves much more into the history of Fiction House: how it came about, its place in the industry, a recounting of some of its better known writers and illustrators, including Will Eisner, and Bob Kane. This introduction, while informative, reads a bit choppy, and I wouldn’t have minded some more time spent here to offer up more full explanations/histories, smoother shifts, and a bit more cultural context, as when the introduction quotes Trina Robbins saying about Fiction Houses’ female characters: “[most] were strong beautiful, competent heroines. They were war nurses, aviatrixes, girl detectives, counterspies, and animal-skin-clad jungle queens, and they were in command.” The intro also touches upon the comic’s connection to the B-movie horror studios, runs through some of the artists, and touches upon some of the problematic portrayals thanks to the comics being written at a time “when ethnic stereotyping was a commonplace practice.” While the attempt to place said portrayals in context is both worthy and probably necessary, the phrase “affectionate condescension” is an unfortunate one I’d say (referring to the dialect of one of the black characters, which indeed is wince-inducing).

After a series of wonderfully lurid and colorful covers from the 50s by Maurice Whitman, the collection moves into the reprints of the old Ghost Gallery stories, running from page 17 to page 95.

The stories themselves are probably more interesting as historical artifacts than as compelling narratives. They tend to feel a bit repetitive after about halfway through, and the few at the end almost feel like after-thoughts or toss-offs by writers not getting paid very much, they’re so sketchy. The ghosts in the works are surprisingly substantive at times, able to interact with objects and people. Others use their spectral knowledge to gain vengeance on those who did them wrong or to otherwise seek justice. The mix of the private eye/noir genre with the ghost story one is interesting, with Murdoch getting called in by someone who knows he’s the “go-to guy” when it comes to investigating not just crimes but crimes with a potentially supernatural element to them. As mentioned, the ethnic portrayals (or regional ones, such as the moonshining/feuding hillbillies) are painful at times; luckily they don’t arise very often, one assumes thanks to the selection process.

The art is solid if conservative by today’s standards. Panels are generally symmetrical and roughly all the same size with characters and action tightly constrained. Characters are surprisingly static much of the time. Every now and then the illustrator will play around with a triangular panel, an asymmetrical slanted one, or one set somewhat askew, and these are a relief from the relative monotony otherwise. Things do liven up as the stories move forward artistically; I’m not sure whether that’s a result of the editing/selecting process or a chronological effect as the artists matured and became more experimental. Throughout though, the covers remained an artistic highlight.

I can’t say the stories or the art were particularly impressive or at all compelling, but I did enjoy the general “spirit” of them. And as historical documentation, both of the comic book art and of pop culture, Ghosts and Girls of Fiction House! is a nice record, even if I would have liked a bit more analysis in the intros.

Not quite second rate

these ghosts stories fall somewhere between the EC and AIG horror offerings, with inconsistent stories and art. They mostly concern a Ghost Detective whose personality is not very developed and many stories have a Scooby Doo ending. The Iger Shop had some great talents, but that doesn't shine in this volume.

Needs better organization

Risqu�? Maybe a little; but not by today's standards.

But are they sexist?

It's interesting that in so many of these sexy girl comics, the heroine is the strong character. She's not waiting for a man to save her. She's not here simply for men. Do they pass the Bechdel test? I don't know. More on that later.

Famed indie comic author Trina Robbins noted "most of [Fiction House's] stories either starred or featured strong, beautiful, competent heroines. They were war nurses, aviatrixes, girl detectives, counterspies, and animal-skin-clad jungle queens, and they were in command."

Ghosts and Girls gives the interesting history of Fiction House comics. It even has a pulpy vibe to the writing. It describes how Fiction House set the pace for horror comics but newer publishing houses like EC seemed to be the ones that started the genre.

It's interesting how many big comic names contributed to these before creating the superheroes they were known for - like Jack Kirby or Bob Kane.

But then, for me, the confusion started. About 10% of this book is essay - describing some of the interesting history noted above. In this section, it would have been good if the covers shown could have related to the text. For example, when he talks about Bob Hebberd's googley eyes, it would have been good to see an example rather than Jumbo Comics #164, which isn't even mentioned in the text.

But then, the hardest thing to figure out about this book is the structure. It appears to be a couple of essays on Fiction House followed by examples of some of the comics. (And I'm assuming that the covers following the section on Maurice Whitman, though it should be more explicit, at least in the captions.) Then next 10% is these example covers.

And then, more than 75% of this almost-200-page-book is actual comics.

I've never really read any of these old horror books. They're pulpy and fun.

Though sometimes a bit confusing; the grammar isn't the best and there's often a lot going on - who killed who and when?

And to be honest, after reading several of these stories they get a bit tedious. Why? Because, they're all about Drew Murdoch, Ghost Hunter. Maybe this book should have been called "Ghosts and Drew Murdoch of Fiction House."

Are the several comics shown here the best examples of Fiction House fare? A random sampling? An intro to each one might have been good. And maybe a closing the book ends with the last page of the last comic.

Unfortunately, none of the comics were good examples of what the essays were talking about. The closest we get to strong women is the Cleopatra story where she curses those that have defiled her grave. Other than that, it's just a bunch of ghost stories being investigated by our intrepid ghost expert Drew Murdoch.

This book would have been much, much more interesting if the essays had tied to the comics somehow - and if the text was more explicit about it.

Clinics for cardiogenetic disorders have been established in many academic teaching hospitals in Europe. In these clinics, cardiologists, clinical and molecular geneticists, genetic nurses, and social workers closely cooperate to provide optimal care for individuals with cardiac disease of probable genetic origin and their family members. However, the prevalence of genetic cardiomyopathies and primary electrical heart diseases is sufficiently high, that it is neither desirable nor possible that the care for this group of patients and their relatives remains solely restricted to a small number of academic centers. There are now a number of cardiology guidelines referencing genetic testing for a wide variety of syndromes ranging from the familial thoracic aneurysm syndromes, cardiomyopathies and arrhythmias to adults with congenital heart disease. For most of us who graduated more than a decade ago, the realms of genetic testing and family counseling is a highly unfamiliar territory.

This outstanding, well-illustrated and well-referenced book discusses the current state of the art in a clear and well-organized way.

The book begins with a well written review of basic genetics and molecular biology -necessary for those of us who are far from the classroom stage of our careers.

Following that are clear chapters regarding specific disease entities (Congenital heart disease, muscular dystrophy, hypertrophic cardiomyopathies, arrhythmias, connective tissue disorders etc). The chapter on Noncompaction cardiomyopathy is the most complete thing I've found on this entity to date.

The book also has chapters which turn the picture around to specific clinical finding and work backwards to the syndromes that should be considered (i.e. "Sudden Cardiac Death in the Young"). It is not just a book of zebras; plenty of horses are reviewed as well (The pharmacogenetics of Atherosclerosis, Genetics of arterial thrombosis, The genetics of AAA).

I would recommend that a copy of this book be on hand for any medium to large cardiology group. It works well both as a reference for occasional user and as a read-through book for the cardiologist with a deeper interest/ Clinical Cardiogenetics

Interrupted Rhythm

There is a kind of rhythm to the dialogue in a Clifford D. Simak story. Lines of dialogue are frequently interrupted by forms of "he/she said" and then continued. Here is a sampling of dialogue from _The Werewolf Principle_ (1967) between the hero (on a fishing trip) and a Brownie:

[The creature's] snout twitched. "Would you, perhaps," it asked in its squeaking voice, "have food inside that basket?"
"Why, yes," said Blake. "I take it that you are hungry."
It was absurd, of course. In just a little while-- in another minute, if not less-- this illustration from a children's book would go away and he could get on with his fishing.
"I'm starving," said the illustration. "The people who usually set out food for me have gone on a vacation. I've been scrounging ever since. Have you, perhaps, sometime in your life, tried scrounging for food?"
"I don't think," said Blake, "that I ever have". (40)

Here is a similar pattern of dialogue between Blake and a talking Diner:

"How are you?" asked the Diner. The voice was that of a brassy, wise-cracking waitress. "What will it be this morning?"
Blake looked around, seeing no one, then realized the situation. Another robotic installation, like the flying houses.
He went across the floor and sat down on one of the stools.
"Cakes," he said, "and some bacon. And coffee."
He let the knapsack slip off his shoulder and lowered it to the floor beside the stool.
"Out early, aren't you?" asked the Diner. "Don't tell me you have walked all night."
"Not all night," said Blake. "Up early, that is all."
"Don't see many of you fellows anymore," the Diner said. "What is your racket, friend?"
"I do a little writing," said Blake. "At least, I try to do it." (109-110)

Of course, Simak is much too crafty a writer to use this pattern of dialogue all the time. He can be terse and snappy when he needs to be. There is even one chapter in the form of dialogue from a Senate hearing. But Simak uses that broken, rhythmic pattern of dialogue a lot in novel after novel, story after story. And he uses a similar style when dealing with mental thought patterns:

It could not stay here, it told itself. It could not wander endlessly. It must find a place to shelter.
...
The lights? it wondered. Should it investigate the lights or should it... (7)

The style in _Werewolf_, laced with phrases like "of course" and "perhaps," loans itself to a slow, easy pace and a sense of Simak's brotherhood of all creatures. The story is one of Simak's better novels. We have a hero rescued from suspended animation whom we can be _pretty_ damned well sure is more than he seems to be, a political battle in Washington over the use of genetic engineering to colonize the stars (opposed by fundamentalists and social conservatives), and a 200 year old project called the werewolf project that apparently went askew. There is also a future world of computerized homes, giant flying freighters, alien brownies, wandering scholars, and antigravity devices. Read this one for the basic story. But read this one for the style as well.

One host mind- many resident alien personalities...

I find it remarkable that Simak was writing about genetic engineering in 1967. He even nailed the fact that religious and social conservatives would be up in arms over the issue.

Set some five hundred years into the future, mankind has been exploring space for centuries. Yet, remarkably few of the new worlds that have been discovered are suitable for human life. In fact, only the terrible expensive and time-consuming process of terra forming can make more worlds livable for man.

However, genetic engineers have come up with a program to adapt man to fit an alien environment and not vice versa. Humans could be genetically altered to exist under hostile conditions of intolerable gravity, heat, cold, or toxic atmospheres. While they might not look strictly human in the traditional sense, inside they would still think and feel as any other human being might.

Reactionary elements, however, held that this would be unnatural and the results would not be human as much they would be abominations and monsters.

What neither side initially knew was that this experiment had been tried two centuries before- and abandoned. At that time an even more radical experiment had been attempted. Instead of adapting one strain of man to a single hostile environment, a synthetic man (an android) would be developed with an open-ended genetic structure that would be able to mimic the form, and the mind, of any alien life form. It was thought that this would be the perfect tool to infiltrate and study any alien culture. It was also thought that such an open-ended synthetic man could be reused on many different planets. What the bio-engineers didn't realize was that every time such a being took on the form of an alien he would also take on its mind- permanently. This meant that over time many different, individual, alien personalities would share the same brain- a sort of ultimate schizophrenic. Not only that, but these different alien personalities would be able to intercommunicate and cooperate. Plus, at any moment, they could take on their original form once again. That was why the original breakthrough had been termed the "Werewolf Principle."

Now, after 200 years of being frozen in deep space, the last surviving experimental "werewolf" has been found and returned to earth. Yet neither he, nor his rescuers know who or what he truly is. Not only that, but the two alien personalities melded with the original synthetic are a psychic wolf-thing that can even talk to the stars, and a chameleon-like biological computer of near infinite intellect.

The debate over genetic engineering is about to get very interesting....

Intriguing Vision of the Future

The Werewolf Principle was the first Simak novel I read, and it grabbed me right away. The image of the future he painted in this novel, while anachronistic in many ways, was still very compelling and just strange enough to seem real. The characterization was somewhat bland, but that's a usual Simak style choice and you learn to like it if you like Simak.
Just the little things, like the wardrobe choices of the society in the novel, or the sentient AI houses were sources of immense wonder to me when I read this as a teenager in the late 70s/early 80s and to some extent they still are. It's a wonderful visionary SF novel that still works.

About the Author
Daved Barry is Professor of Creative Organization Studies in the Department of Management, Politics and Philosophy at the Copenhagen Business School, and Adjunct Professor at Nova SBE (Universidade Nova de Lisboa School of Business and Economics). Earlier he studied painting, chemistry, music, and cooking, eventually going on to complete a BA (hons) in Psychology and a PhD in Strategic Management and Organizational Psychology at the University of Maryland. In 1986 he moved to Syracuse University, NY, where he taught strategic management, and then to New Zealand where he held the Victoria University Chair in Creative Organization Studies. From there he assumed the Banco BPI Chair in Creative Organization Studies in Lisbon, and eventually moved to CBS in 2010. His work focuses on how design and the arts can improve organizing, problem solving, innovation, managing, and leadership. Some of his accomplishments include the co-founding of AACORN (Arts, Aesthetics, Creativity, and Organization Research Network), and LAICS (www.laics.net), a graduate program in innovation and leadership. In 2007 he was awarded the Career Achievement Award for Innovative�Scholarship, from the Imagination Lab Foundation and the European Academy of Management, and in 2008 published The Sage Handbook of New Approaches to Management and Organization, a compendium of contemporary management thinking.

New and stimulating flavors

Barry and Hansen's introduction to `The Sage handbook of new approaches in management and organization' expresses a frustration that can be found in parts of the organizational theory community: The battle lines became sharply drawn in the eighties, with a polarization between positivism and postpositivism or modernist and postmodernists. In the nineties the demarcation was reinforced by scholars defending and retaining incommensurability between the camps rooted in the sixties' polarization between functional and interpretive approaches. Barry and Hansen now call for coming together "in the same building for the first time in a long time". They suggest that the time has come for the `relational' - for combination between what has been fragmented - after years of fragmentation and pluralism. And they believe a relational turn will contribute to improved organizations.

Among all the handbooks of organization and management, Barry and Hansen's new book adds new and stimulating flavors. It is highly recommended.

Wonderfully Written

A scintillating love story that had me hooked from page one. Tad reminded me of my very first crush, it was a cowboy at a rodeo too and it just brought back so many fantastic memories for me. I was like Carmen in that I have always been searching for a little thrill or excitement to add to my life and she found hers in Tad. I will be highly recommending this book to all my friends and to anyone out there that ever had the cowboy fantasy when they were growing up, this one is for you!

About the Author
Richard J. Haier earned his PhD from The Johns Hopkins University and is Professor Emeritus at the University of California, Irvine. Brilliant, informative, and in a smooth writing style.

This is an excellent book, with up to date information about the latest forms of brain imaging and other research into human cognition. Haier is the leader in the rapidly developing field of intelligence research based on brain imaging. This book is written in a style that makes the reading easy, but without sacrificing its technical merits. I think it is the best book relating to intelligence research since Jensen's The g Factor.

This book covers such controversial ground in a way that is not incendiary. Dr. Haier addresses the issue in a way that makes clear that intelligence's biological basis is not open to dispute, except by those who choose to keep their heads in the sand as, alas, do many activists and social "scientists." The book manages to be fully authoritative, with key assertions documented by solid research (by dozens of top researchers, not just by the author), yet fully accessible to any, ahem, intelligent reader. I consider this up-to-the-minute book a must-read for anyone who wants to think in a clear-eyed way about the basis of individual and group differences, not only in intelligence, but in school and life success.

A joy to read

This book deserves to be much more widely used. Ziman's prose is simply wonderful, where Kittel is unreadable, and Ashcroft & Mermin often dense. It's a bit quirky (how on earth did he find the epigrams for each chapter?) but that is what makes it lovable. Anyone who doubts his scientific soundness should check out his massive "Electrons & Phonons."
The main advantage of this book is that it emphasizes conceptual understanding over mathematical manipulation. That's also its weakness: Ziman often glosses over or just sketches what in other texts would be occasions for massive algebra. Perhaps if you are a true theorist type, you can fill in the blanks on your own. As an experimentalist, I feel like I need some other intro texts to make me feel like I can do *some* math in the field. On the other hand, I don't know of any textbook that makes me feel I could do the truly heavy lifting.

No doubt as good as the first edition

I used heavily the first edition of this book, and have not seen the second, but it is no doubt as good as the first, which was packed full of insights into the many rich phenomena that exists in solids. It has served, and will serve, future generations of students in the 21st century in their development of new ideas and technologies based on condensed matter physics.
Writers of physics texts should follow the strategy that this author does, in his statement that "a treatise expounds; a textbook explains". The emphasis of any book in physics should be in developing the reader's intuition; the mathematics sometimes takes hold and moves the reader away from the essential ideas. The author is one of the few who has not done this, and that is no doubt the reason for this book's popularity.

Wow a pleasure to read

There are few physics books that I can say I enjoy reading for fun (and I'm a student of physics) but I must admit that this book is excellent. It holds true not only to its reputation but to what the author's original intent was. It is thorough, enlightening, to the point and fun to read, the author's sense of humor not only aids in ease or reading but makes retention and elucidation all the more easy! This is an excellent graduate text on basic solid sate physics, even though it was published in 1975.

It covers all the bascis areas, from periodicty to lattice waves, phonons, semiconductors etc at an accessible level to the beginning graduate student. A must read.
