Our history was so white washed, and I was never told any thing like this in school.
The minute men were hired to kill anyone in disagreement with the war.
I love knowledge. I hate being lied to.
From the beginning of WW1 this country has been lied to, cheated, and if you have a brain you know that ALL news is controlled by the president/government from the beginning of WW1 and they never let go.

What a Wonderful Book

Although I'd first heard of Alan Watts' The Book: On the Taboo Against Knowing Who You Are several years ago, it wasn't until I watched Dakota Wint's YouTube video Top 5 Books Every New Spiritual Seeker Needs that I was motivated enough to actually check it out. First things first—I know that I will benefit a lot from re-reading this book several times. It's extremely dense and packed with a lot of valuable information, a lot of which I likely didn't absorb during my first reading of the book.

The basic premise of the book is that we have been told that we are isolated beings, "unconnected to the rest of the universe", which has led to our viewing the "outside" world with hostility and "has fueled our misuse of technology and our violent and hostile subjugation of the natural world". However, Watts asserts that this belief is mistaken and that we are in fact directly connected to everything else there is. In the beginning of the book, Watts discusses the concept of cultural taboos—things like making direct eye contact with another person or performing an act that is against one's religion. This leads him to make the following point:

"The most strongly enforced of all known taboos is the taboo against knowing who or what you really are behind the mask of your apparently separate, independent, and isolated ego."

The concept of "I" is extremely powerful and commonplace in most societies on Earth, and it is so fundamental to our modes of speech and thought, as well as our laws and social institutions. Watts spends many words of this book arguing against the concept of personal selfhood in favor of a more universal concept of identity—one that includes the rest of reality in addition to the components that we would normally judge as "ourselves".

One of the other things I found interesting was Watts' definition of "attention" as "narrowed perception"—because when we attend to one thing, we ignore everything else. In Watts' own words: "conscious attention is at the same time ignore-ance (i.e., ignorance) despite the fact that it gives us a vividly clear picture of whatever we choose to notice."

These are just some of the concepts that Watts describes in The Book. If either of these ideas sound interesting to you, I would definitely give this a read. I wish that this review was able to more fully show how wonderful this book is, but since this is only my first read-through, I feel like I was only able to skim the surface of its ideas and therefore will likely have more to say about it upon successive readings. I definitely give this one two thumbs up though!

This simple book has been one of my Bibles for over 50 years. It conveys the essence of Watts' thought and insight which provides a fundamental philosophic grounding wholly compatible with both modern science as well as a spiritual dimension. Though said to be the first to introduce the West to Eastern religion, he really breaks rigid boundaries of religion, inviting the reader to discover a Natural Theology that makes the Universe our home.

Alan Watts and the Mother-Lode of Spirituality

Like a number of the reviewers here, I have a decades-long history with THE BOOK. In my case, it launched a life-long pilgrimage marked by the study of Vedanta, mysticism, and religious philosophy, and a deep existential craving to understand. THE BOOK sparkles with quotable lines on almost every page, some witty, some profound. Watts had discovered the mother-lode of spirituality, Advaita Vedanta, and he expressed it in a form that (literally) children can understand.

The central thesis of THE BOOK can be expressed in a single sentence: "Every individual is an expression of the whole realm of nature, a unique action of the total universe." (p. 9).

From the beginning, Watts insists that what is needed is not "words to live by," but a new sense of self and the world. When confronted by a world it perceives as alien and hostile to itself, the reaction of the empty and impoverished ego is to attack. While our present limited view has led us into a cycle of violence against our environment and each other, the first battle field is intimately personal:

"Our generation knows a cold hell, solitary confinement in this life, without a God to damn or save it. Until man figures out the trap and hunts ... "the Ultimate Ground of Being," he has no reason at all for his existence. Empty, finite, he knows only that he will soon die. Since this life has no meaning, and he sees no future life, he is not really a person but a victim of self-extinction." (p. 17)

The internecine human conflicts Watts has observed and the rapacious resolve to subjugate nature are rooted, not only in the "ego-trick," but in the "dualism" that Vedanta also denies, the conviction that Reality divides neatly into two opposed halves, whether man and nature, life against death, or pure good vs. pure evil. Moreover, rather than see these dualities as poles of a single process, we see within each dyad two bitter enemies of one another. We play "the game of black and white," as Watts calls it, not as a game at all, but as a war. At this writing, the same ancient warfare is being enacted between Republicans and Democrats, and between Moslems and the West. Not content to moderate and "contain" the conflict, each side works to exterminate the other.

From beginning to end, Watts returns again and again, ever more elegantly to restate the original problem:

"The sensation of "I" as a lonely and isolated center of being is so powerful and commonsensical, and so fundamental to our modes of speech and thought, to our laws and social -institutions, that we cannot experience selfhood except as something superficial in the scheme of the universe. I seem to be a brief light that flashes but once in all the aeons of time-- a rare, complicated, and all-too-delicate organism on the fringe of biological evolution, where the wave of life bursts into individual, sparkling, and multicolored drops that gleam for a moment only to vanish forever. Under such conditioning it seems impossible and even absurd to realize that myself does not reside in the drop alone, but in the whole surge of energy which ranges from the galaxies to the nuclear fields in my body." (pp. 12-13)

On the other hand, Watts is eager to disabuse us of the notion that, now we must strive with all our might to realize that this is so. There is an ancient traditional formula that "The One has become many for the sake of reunion through Love." If this is so, the Self is free to awaken or not in its own good time. In the meantime, our adventure will not leave a trace on its original nature.

What then ARE we to do with this astonishing revelation?

"If, then, after understanding, at least in theory, that the ego-trick is a hoax and that, beneath everything, "I" and "universe" are one, you ask, "So what? What is the next step, the practical application?"-- I will answer that the absolutely vital thing is to consolidate your understanding, to become capable of enjoyment, of living in the present, and of the discipline which this involves. Without this you have nothing to give-- to the cause of peace or of racial integration, to starving Hindus and Chinese, or even to your closest friends," (p. 115-116)

I have been cultivating that advice ever since.

Not a complete understanding of Chinese medicine and stones.

The authors take a limited number of stones and ascribe various properties to them. They utilize mainly the organ clock. these are shiastu/japanese trained guys.

If you are interested in healing stones and chinese medicine, Dr. Jeffrey Yuen's student is coming out with a book soon. this one is a must read

At the first pages there was something I didn't get.
She saw him when she was 18 and now 8 years later, when she is 22 (huh?) they come to collect her for the alphas.

But next to that it is a nice erotic read.

And again two stories in it. Like the second one as good as the first one.
Her books are built up the same, but I don't care, I like them any way.

Loved the book, she flees a unfaithful lover and ends up in a unsafe injured situation saved by brothers who show her compassion and make sure she knows she is safe and everything they will do is with her consent , and that they will make it good for her. Of course she want this with these hunky brothers, and it beyond anything she ever imagines

This would be a really good story if it had been in more depth. I felt like I read a chapter to get to know the main female character and then she met the shifter men that were going to be her mates, then bam, sex. I am not saying it was written bad, because it wasn't but I have never liked a story where you know nothing about the characters except how many times they have sex. I wanted more and was disappointed. Sorry.

The speed at which Zo� goes from reading a few racy BDSM novels to being a full-blown submissive is almost instantaneous. Dylan pushes Zo� because he believes that deep inside she craves his dominance. In my opinion this is not only hard to believe, but incredibly unsafe. What I like most is that he is the one who learns what it feels like to truly have love and trust in a D/s relationship.

True to form, Claire Thompson shines.

Having been an active member of the BDSM community since 1991, I first would like to say that it is so refreshing to be able to purchase erotica in American bookstores. At the time I was introduced to the community, I was managing a bookstore and in graduate school at the same time. I remember having to special order erotica from Black Lace (a publisher based in London) because American publishing houses thought it too risque for American audiences. How times have changed.

Claire Thompson was the first American author I read ("Sarah's Surrender" was her first book as well as the first I'd read by her and now the name has been changed to "Sarah's Awakening") and I immediately fell in love with Ms Thompson's writing. She knew what it was like to actually BE a submissive. Those of us who are members of the community can always spot an author who's writing is just a rehash of a book or film this person has seen. Claire Thompson knows what feelings and emotions submissives experience during a scene and I can't appreciate that enough.

I realize this isn't so much of a review of "Brokered Submission" (which is fantastic), but a testament to Ms Thompson's skill as a writer as well as the honest portrayal of a submissive in her novels. I thank her here and I have thanked her via our correspondence. She definitely is one of a kind. She and her colleague, Jaid Black (the brains behind Ellora's Cave - one of the first erotic publishing companies in America) are the real deal...and this is coming from someone who is also the real deal. And to all of those doubters that think this sort of relationship is somehow empty and will come to no good end: I married my Dom, who is also my best friend, confidante, my rock.

Thank you, Ms Thompson, Ms Black and all of the other true submissives, switches, Doms and Dommes who share their stories with the rest of us.

It was a surprisingly informative book about the BDSM lifestyle and if you have ever had any questions or doubts about why someone would enjoy this lifestyle, then this book will help you understand. And if you thought that subs were weak, and had no control over the situation, then Brokered Submission will show you the error of your ways. Zoe is an intelligent, capable, strong woman who is certainly not weakened by her submission. Dylan is a loving and caring Dom who has only his sub's needs in mine. I really love both of these characters. The story flows easily and naturally. Another enjoyable read from Ms. Thompson.

About the Author
Margaret H. DeFleur, Associate Professor in the College of Communication at Boston University, teaches courses in quantitative research methods and mass communication theory. She also taught at Syracuse University. She held the position of Visiting Scholar at Harvard University's School of Public Health, and has served on scientific review committees for the National Cancer Institute/National Institutes of Health. Currently, she is the Director of Boston University's graduate degree program in Health Communication. Her research interests include the analysis of government data for use in computer-assisted reporting, and the recall and comprehension of news information by various audiences. She is the author of a number of articles and three books. She received a BS degree and an MBA from the University of Miami. Her PhD is from Syracuse University.

Patricia Kearney (Ed.D. West Virginia University) is Professor of Communication Studies and recipient of the Distinguished Scholar Award at California State University, Long Beach. She regularly teaches communication theory and social science research methods. Her research, both theoretical and applied, focuses on communication in the instructional process. A current member of seven journal editorial boards, Pat has written four books and published more than 70 research articles, chapters, and commissioned research reports.

Melvin L. DeFleur is currently Professor of Mass Communication in the College of Communication at Boston University, where in 1994, he assumed the duties of Director of the School of Mass Communication and Public Relations, a post he occupied for three years. Previously, he held the John Ben Snow Endowed Chair in mass communication at Syracuse University. He has served on the faculties of six universities, three times a departmental chairman and once as a graduate dean for research. Twice, he was a Fulbright Professor to Argentina. He has been responsible for the development and administration of several Ph.D. programs. His scholarly interests focus on human communication. His research interests and publications include theories of the fundamental nature and consequences of mass communication in contemporary society. He has received grants from the National Science Foundation and other federal and private agencies, plus numerous honors and awards. His publications include a long list of articles and more than a dozen books, a number of which have been translated into various languages. He has received numerous awards and recognition for his scholarly work. He holds a BA from St. Louis University, plus an MS and PhD from the University of Washington.

Timothy G. Plax ( Ph.D., University of Southern California) is Professor of Communication Studies at California State University, Long Beach (CSULB). He has been on the faculty at the University of New Mexico and West Virginia University and spent several years as a member of the Executive Staff at the Satellite and Space Divisions of the Rockwell International Corporation. His programs of research focus on social influence and communication in instruction and training. He has received a variety of awards for his writing, research, teaching and consulting activities. A member of several editorial boards, he has written three introductory textbooks and more than 100 research articles, chapters, and commissioned research reports. He is a recipient of the 1998-99 CSULB Distinguished Faculty Research and Creative Activity Award, the 1997-98 CSULB Associated Students Presidential Award, and both the "Triad of Excellence" Engineering Award and the Distinguished Research Award from the Space Division of the Rockwell International Corporation.

One of the worst textbooks I have ever encountered

This book just drags on without really getting to any particular point. One of the worst textbooks I have ever encountered. There would be a paragraph or two about a certain topic only to then be informed that one would cover that topic in a latter chapter. For me, that was confusing and wasteful of my time.

Growing up in a Georgia Tech household, I had always heard about Clint Castleberry from my father. Once I became a sportswriter I wanted to know more about the only player in Tech history to have his number retired. Unfortunately, save for a handful of articles that had been written over the years, I couldn't find out much about him. So I decided to write the book and find out as much as I could on my own about Castleberry. The book actually had been scheduled to come out four years ago, but the first publisher ended up having financial problems and there were some problems with contract the second publisher offered me. Fortunately, in 2011 I found a home for the book.

Among the challenges of writing this book was the fact that many of those who played with Castleberry had died.� Fortunately, I was able to locate some who knew him in high school and in college. Their interviews were invaluable, as was the interview with Charley Trippi and many interviews with� Catleberry's widow. The Georgia Tech Department of Living History was unbelievable, especially its director, Marilyn Somers. And, obviously, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution was invaluable.� I enjoyed the research process, particularly the days when I uncovered a jewel or two that enhanced the story. Those were the good days.

I wasn't exactly surprised to find out he was a gym rat.� This guy loved sports and was a talented athlete in football, basketball, and baseball. He loved to compete and he was a winner. Learning about his days at Boys High was not only fascinating, but it was also something I did not expect. I had no idea that the Atlanta-based high school was a national powerhouse that traveled all over the country to play games. And Castleberry dominated in those games.

This book was a labor of love.� I really enjoyed traveling back to the early 1940s in Atlanta.

About the Author
Bill Chastain began his journalism career as a freelance writer shortly after graduating from Georgia Tech in 1979. Some of the more notable publications where his stories have appeared over the years include: Razor Magazine, Nation's Business, SPORT Magazine, and Inside Sports. Chastain worked as a sports reporter for The St. Petersburg Times and The St. Petersburg Evening Independent before going to The Tampa Tribune in 1990, where he worked for twelve years as a columnist and sports reporter. While with the Tribune he also served as a correspondent for Sports Illustrated. �He is the author of Payne at Pinehurst: The Greatest U.S. Open Ever; Purpose and Passion: Bobby Pruett and the Marshall Years; Steel Dynasty: The Team that Changed the NFL; Peachtree Corvette Club; September Nights: Chasing the Beasts of the American League East;�Hack's 191: Hack Wilson and His Incredible 1930 Season; and The Steve Spurrier Story: From Heisman to Head Ball Coach. Interesting, but not thrilling

I bought this book after seeing a rave review and I was interested in "the best football player you never heard of". The subject matter had promise, but the story telling lacked excitement and was like a collection of news articles and lacked the thrill and emotion I was expecting from a sports biography.

This is a MUST READ for any fan of football within the state of Georgia, especially Georgia Tech. It's also a must read for readers who love the stories of a wartime generation of football stars and coaches. I am no fan of Georgia Tech, but I am a fan of biographies that inspire and elevate my hope for America and this is one such story. Chastain makes sure to communicate that Castleberry was someone special, a born leader from The Greatest Generation who ever lived.
