Beautiful family! Inspirational story!

I began reading Daughters By Design the evening I received it and didn't put it down until I had turned the last page. It was riveting. What a thrilling story of God's love and care for two Cambodian orphans through the obedience of an "older" missionary couple. Paul and Paula's genuine faith and simple obedience will touch your heart and challenge you to say "yes!" to God.

A Blessing to Hear the Rest of the Story

I was overjoyed when I found out Mrs. Jarot would be publishing a book about the amazing adoption journey she and her husband have been on with their girls. I had the great privilege of watching God work miracles the first few months the girls were in the Jarot home and then eagerly awaited His continued mercies as they struggled against all human odds to legally make the girls their own. It is a story that had to be shared. Nearly everyone who knows me has heard at least part of it and they all stand in amazement at what God has done. Watching this family and reading this book have given both my husband and myself the desire to expand our own family through adoption one day. It also opened my eyes to the need for people to adopt older children. Through it all the Lord is given all praise and glory and as much as this story is Mrs Jarot's or her girls'; it is ultimately about God's heart of love.

An adoption miracle!

I love this story. It is real; honest and full of Christ-like parenting! If you have any thoughts about international adoption, you need to read this story.
December 2004 the Jarots were encouraged to seek out a young, precocious orphan in Cambodia. They followed the Lord's call; went to Cambodia and came back to their home in Thailand with not one, but two beautiful young girls. This story lovingly describes how these two girls became part of a family; captured the hearts of many; and became U.S. citizens against all odds. Miracle after miracle are described as the Jarots fought bureaucracy and overcame numerous barriers to legally adopt these girls. It is an amazing story and so well told. You will fall in love with them and shed a few tears along the way.

Finally a good clean mystery/courtroom drama.

This story really had an intriguing beginning that got my attention quickly. It was interesting to see Denney struggle throughout the entire story with his own personal demons and how you kept thinking he was going to change. His relationship with Howie was surprising to Denney as much it was to the reader. The way he had treated Howie was a side Denney himself didn't know he had or just how much he had touched Howie's family through the years. Good story. I so appreciated just reading this book and not having to wade through all the raunchy language and sexual exploitations of the characters. In fact after I finished the book I realized just how refreshing that was. This will make me look forward to another good read by this author. I gave it a high rating because of the descent language, the story line and the just a good twist to a courtroom drama.

Review of McQuarrie's Mathematical Methods for Scientists and Engineers

The late Donald McQuarrie's Mathematical Methods for Scientists and Engineers is a masterpiece!
I have used the text for my graduate mathematical methods course for engineers for four years at
Howard University and I have also used Arfken and Weber's Mathematical Methods for Physicists as
a graduate student at Ohio State University many, many years ago. I also have read and consulted
the late Mary Boas' excellent Mathematical Methods in the Physical Sciences, which is now in its 3rd edition.

While it is true that Arfken and Weber covers more topics than McQuarrie (e.g. tensor analysis and
group theory), McQuarrie is actually a textbook that is clearly written for students to read and follow
with a myriad of examples to work through. Arfken and Weber is a reference book and it is really not
a textbook, although it is used extensively throughout the physics community. I wish that more folks
would discover McQuarrie, who was famous for writing very clear texts in the chemical community.

One criticism I have heard from folks is the presence of typos in McQuarrie. There is a web site by
D. Sober who is collecting these errata for future use. Unfortunately, I suspect that we may not see a
second edition of McQuarrie because of his passing in 2009. One should remember that there were
many typos in the first editions of Arfken (then only Arfken and nor Arfken and Weber) and Boas.

In summary, I suspect that the choice of a book depends on your audience! McQuarrie is a pleasure
to read and work through as a student, although some may not be happy with its omission of tensor
analysis and group theory which are, of course, important topics for physicists. Arfken is really a
reference book and not a textbook. Boas is a beautiful book which is not as extensive as McQuarrie
but is a much better written expository textbook than Arfken and Weber and it even includes an
elementary discussion of group theory and tensor analysis. Those seeking a more mathematical and
less applied perspective may not be happy with any of these three.

If you find yourself struggling through Arfken and Weber, then I might suggest checking out McQuarrie,
and even Boas. I would agree with a review I once read that McQuarrie is Arfken and Weber done right!
McQuarrie contains more material than an instructor can cover in a one-year course, but it makes
a serious attempt to provide a considerable amount of background material for a clear expository discussion
of linear algebra, ordinary differential equations, complex variables, partial differential equations,
non-linear differential equations, and probability and statistics. The remarkable thing is that it is all done
in a single textbook. McQuarrie also comes in paperback form for those who want to watch their pennies,
along with a solutions manual for instructors.

It's too bad the author died before his second edition

It's too bad the author died before his second edition. This is the ultimate reference book I have for all math related problems. It gives a good approach to a very broad range of problems. Whenever I have to refresh on a mathematical topic like Green's functions I pull this book from my shelf. To work through the problems the solution's manual is a must while it greatly lacks in depth in some areas. This is definitely a reference text that should be on your shelf. 1100 pages of great reference in an age when book prices are sky high and this book is so cheap in comparison. This book was assigned for my Advanced Applied Analysis class and I couldn't be happier having this as a broad reference. For more in depth approaches countless books are out there and sometimes all you need is to scratch the surface in the theory of a topic to gain a lot.

A few math courses meshed into one book.

The title befits the book in presenting mathematical methods for solving problems that extend between analogous facets of several disciplines. I used this book for a course in mathematical physics and it also served as the primary text for students in physics and engineering. This text covers material from linear algebra, differential equations, PDEs, complex analysis and statistics; although most courses won't go into the material on stochastic processes and probability theory presented at the very end of the book. The inclusion of these topics, however, does not necessarily make this book a comprehensive one. So let's be clear about one thing: this book has breadth, not depth.

I think this book is daring in its attempt to cover a lot of ground and serves as a sort of hybrid from amongst a series of undergraduate math texts. However, I would recommend a separate book on differential equations for later chapters in the book that deal with Sturm-Liouville problems, Fourier series and integral transforms as it kind of washes over the material with a lot of summaries but is still relatively easy if you had any decent exposure to mathematics. I found "Mathematical Methods for Physicists and Engineers" by Riley, Hobson and Bence to be a good alternative but I am confident that a lot of the material is available in books you have previously used in other math courses.

Just starting off

I've been grabbing for any and all info in regards to the world of belly dancing. Though I do not sew (so far).. Going through this book was highly informative. It tells you how to pick the costume for your body type (something everyone should learn how to do!), as well as instructs on how to go about putting a costume together. I might donate this book to my sister, as she sews... maybe I can hire her to make a costume or two!
For anyone who does make their own costumes, or sews anything at all - I would definitely recommend this book.

... Yes, it does clearly say "spiral bound" in the description- but it doesn't say that the book starts to fall apart the first time you turn the pages!
The content is pretty good. Maybe I've just read too much on the subject- but I didn't learn anything I didn't already know. The belt patterns in the back are nice, though.
If you've created belly dance costumes for the stage, this book is probably not going to give you any ideas you haven't already come up with yourself or seen on other dancers.

Michael Harris is the author of The End of Absence, which won the Governor General’s Literary Award for Non-fiction and was longlisted for the RBC Taylor Prize, the Chautauqua Prize, and the BC National Award for Canadian Non-fiction. He writes about media, civil liberties, and the arts for dozens of publications, including The Washington Post, Wired, Salon, and The Globe and Mail. He lives in Vancouver.

A Thoughtful Reminder of Something We Are Losing

This is a good book. It's a thoughtful reflection on what has happened to solitude in our hyper- connected world. Much of the book is a chronicle of the author's own search for solitude. There are some side journeys to interview various brain scientists or authors or other people who are thinking about the same thing. It's a short book and easy to read and yet it does stimulate one's own reflection on the subject. It's just an important reminder of what we might be losing and I can easily recommend it.

Sizzles with liberating energy

I read the advance copy a couple of months back, and "Solitude" really moved me. As the corporate lock on both politics and our individual autonomy tightens, along comes "Solitude" sizzling with liberating energy. It's an entertaining grapple with current brain science, literature, and philosopy, and is smart, off-beat and ultimately moral. I'm sure this book will contribute to the “Great Turning” from an outdated, planet-smothering orthodoxy to a fresh, diverse, and healthy Earth-culture. Do check it out!

Thoughtful

A smart, thoughtful, well-researched book about the importance of the diminishing experience of solitude in the age of the Internet of things. Harris questions the value of our increased connectivity and what is being lost as a result. A worthwhile investigation with some interesting side notes.
