A classic guide for evaluation techniques

Dr. Tessmer is a well-recognized expert in the field of instructional design. He has published other books on task analysis in instructional design. In fact, his book on formative evaluations is one of the favorite books used to teach formative evaluation in graduate instructional design courses. Another book to consult on this topic is Formative Evaluation for Educational Technologies by Barbara N. Flagg. A useful book on summative evaluation techniques is Program Evaluation: Alternative Approaches and Practical Guidelines by Blaine R. Worthen and others. The Tessmer and Flagg books are specifically focused on instructional technology products.
Chapter one explains the purpose behind conducting a formative evaluation and what the benefits of such an evaluation are. Chapter two gives fairly detailed information about planning a formative evaluation. The remaining four chapters each describe one of the four typical types of formative evaluation: expert review, one-to-one, small group, and field test.
This book contains a great deal of practical step-by-step information. It is obviously written by someone who has conducted many instructional design reviews and evaluations. The discussion for each of the four evaluation approaches contains a lot of sound advice on associated pitfalls as well as specific procedures. Procedures are well-defined in a step-by-step format. Example forms and questionnaires are provided where appropriate. This book is a "must have" for any instructional designer or evaluator. If you are looking for guidelines on program evaluation, especially summative evaluation, then check out the Worthen book. If you are looking for help with front-end analysis, check out Task Analysis Methods for Instructional Design, by Jonassen, Tessmer, and Hannum.
This is an excellent resource, and I hope that Dr. Tessmer will someday write an updated version of this classic.

Beautiful Things Happen When a Woman Trusts God by Sheila Walsh

The opening illustration of the book is quite personal, as the author thinks of herself as a child on a swing, being pushed by her mother higher and higher. Oh, how she loved to go so high! One day at the park through unforeseen circumstances, the neighborhood bully began to push her on the swing. He wasn't pushing her any higher than she had gone before, yet she was terrified. It wasn't about the swing or the experience. It was completely and totally about WHO was pushing. This is defined as trust and is what I felt to be the foundational premise for the book.

Sheila Walsh provides twelve chapters with topics such as fear, pain, and darkness; then gives us a Biblical glimpse of how God turns them into courage, prayer, and vision. A few of the Bible characters discussed in the book are Moses, Gideon, Joseph, and Abraham. The author outlines how each character's trust in God or lack of was displayed in their lives through different avenues and circumstances and then God's revelation of beauty in their walks with Him is unfolded.

My favorite quote: "We don't always see it, are tempted not to trust it, but the fact remains that God is always making a way for you that's according to His grand plan." This book spoke to me personally on so many levels. I loved every minute of reading it.

In the conclusion, the author returns to her example of the swing and lists some amazing insights. I'll not list them here; you need to read the book!

Beautiful Things Happened...

This book was an absolute treat. As I turned the last page, I had the warmest feeling, like Sheila and I had just had a very long and deep cup of coffee together. Her approach is personal and her transparency is bold, beautiful, and entertaining; meanwhile she is training the reader in how transparency can set us free, if it leads us and others to Christ.

"...but now I know the truth... & the freedom that comes from understanding- I am not the good news" (Walsh).

Amen!

There is absolute Biblical truth throughout, yet not a hint of churchy stuffiness. As a fellow sinner saved by grace, who believes our stories are our gifts from God, meant to help us reach others for God's Kingdom, I was in good company. I was comforted, while still challenged and informed by the light Sheila's words shed on how fear can be wiped out, if trust in God is truly present. She has done a remarkable job sharing her genuine heart for God among the pages of this book. Her writing is clever and humorous, yet logical and thought-provoking.

Great Book for Those Struggling With Disappointment

When I picked up Sheila Walsh's book, Beautiful Things Happen When a Woman Trusts God, I was feeling sorry for myself due to a few disappointments that had come my way. I was immediately drawn in as Walsh opens up the book with her own series of disappointments and a feeling that something wasn't quite right, which eventually led her, formerly a co-host for the 700 Club, to end up in a psychiatric hospital diagnosed with clinical depression.

All of a sudden, my petty little grievances didn't seem so bad.

Through heartfelt honesty and humor, Walsh tells her story of losing her father as a little girl, of working so hard to gain approval, of being broken by disappointment and unacceptance, of hearing God in the midst of complete turmoil and ultimately trusting Him even though what He's asking doesn't make sense. In this book, she highlights the lives of some amazing people in the Bible who have been through the same journey. They trusted when things seemed impossible. They followed when they weren't sure what God was doing. They sacrificed their own wills to bring glory to God.

Anna, a widow who shared God's love with women who came to the temple. Her seemingly simple life made such a huge impact on so many. Mary and Martha, who waited on Jesus to perform the miracle of miracles - raising Lazarus from the dead - something that seemed so impossible and unbelievable yet they trusted. Stephen eventually died for his faith but went down praising God. And Saul, who was present at Stephen's death, congratulating those who killed him, and who eventually was blinded by God until he saw the truth.

These are all people, just like us, who have trusted when circumstances seem bleak.

Walsh does an excellent job of weaving her own experiences with those of several men and women in the Bible. Judging from the title of the book, I expected to see more stories of women from the Bible, but ultimately, each person's account helped move the book along. She also brings perspective to the trials we face today. Also included with Sheila's book is an in-depth Bible study which I think would be great for someone struggling through a season of disappointment or feeling disconnected from God.

Francamente la autora debi� para en Divergente. Insurgente y Leal son dos novelas sin sentido, con personajes accesorios desdibujados, sin una trama clara y con cientos de p�ginas de relleno. Como a muchos lectores, el final me pareci� innecesariamente fatal y sin ninguna lecci�n de por medio. Muchas lagunas en la historia, muchos hilos sueltos. Lo rescatable de Leal es haberle dado voz propia a los dos personajes principales, narrando las situaciones desde cada perspectiva. Me incluyo en la lista de lectores que se quedaron sin ganas de leer m�s de Veronica Roth.

A "by the numbers" book that will only hurt your artistic development

First off, Christopher Hart cannot draw, let alone instruct others on how to draw. Christopher Hart books are generally best avoided, and Drawing Fantastic Furries is no exception. In general, most of your "How to Draw" books focused on a specific cartoon niche are worthless. I'm talking about ones like "How to Draw Fantasy Creatures" or "How to Draw Manga Heroes" or "How to Draw Vampires." Not every "How to Draw" book is bad, but those focused on very specific cartoon niches are frequently bad and simply designed to cash in on whatever cartoon subject or style is popular at the time. They're frequently drawn by people who cannot draw themselves. Again, in this sense Christopher Hart is no exception. If you look through his many books, you'll see that his own drawings are amateurish and plagued with horrid anatomy that would make Rob Liefield look like Leonardo da Vinci. Most of the illustrations that actually appear to be good (until you start to dissect the components such as composition and anatomy) are by other artists.

Another problem is that this book, like many of your current "How to Draw" books, is not well suited for total beginners. You generally get a stick figure for the initial sketching, a roughed out model using the "construction method" (breaking the subject down into fundamental geometric shapes), and then the rest of the illustrative process is skipped to show a finished character. This is all well and good for folks who are familiar with the general process of drawing a subject and know how to build up the anatomy, the clothing, the accessories, and then bring it together into a finished product. But for newbies, these crucial details are generally omitted and do little other than encourage the neophyte to replicate the specific image. So it omits those "magical mystery steps" that are actually useful for fleshing out a drawing. It also provides very little information that is useful for then going on to create your own image.

If you will click the "Look Inside" link above, I'll mention a few things about the images you can see in the preview to illustrate how you are better off avoiding this book. For example, the second image is a tiger warrior. If you'll look at his torso, the area of the diaphragm between the pectoral and abdominal muscles has been "fudged" into part of the abdominal complex. The torso has no depth and the sense of musculature is very poor. Likewise, the shoulders are not well placed on the body. The right arm in particular is almost completely detached. The fox girl on the sixth preview page is poorly posed. The line of her body suggests her weight is evenly distributed and not shifted primarily to her left foot. Yet her right foot only has the tips of the toes touching the ground, suggesting it bears little or no weight. This is simply poor development of the pose and a lack of any real sense of how the body moves both physically and artistically. Further into the preview, there are pages about "Character Consistency at Different Angles." However, the different illustrations are of different characters, clearly avoiding the challenge of actually maintaining consistency of the **same** character at different angles. Look through the preview pages of this book and ask yourself, "Do I really want to limit my artistic development by only learning to draw like this fellow?" Especially when it is evident that he, himself, cannot draw.

If you are looking for good instructional books there are many out there that are more tried and true for aspiring cartoonists. These include:
Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain
How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way (Despite the "How to Draw" part of the title, this book provides a good look at figure drawing, composition, storytelling, and other very basic artistic elements as they apply to the comic book industry. Though a bit dated, it has stood the test of time for many generations of aspiring comic artists.)
Drawing the Head and Figure by Jack Hamm
Drawing Animals by Jack Hamm
Dynamic Anatomy by Burne Hogarth (Hogarth approaches anatomy more like an architect or mathematician, but the book provides a very solid sense of the human figure as a series of more complex geometric relationships that move beyond the more basic shapes conveyed in many figure drawing books.)

If you are interested in drawing anthropomorphic characters specifically, I would suggest pairing the two books by Jack Hamm mentioned above and grabbing "How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way" if you can get it as well. By learning to draw both regular humans and animals well, you will equip yourself with the knowledge and skill to combine those subjects into amazing, fanciful furry creatures that will put Christopher Hart's by-the-numbers characters to shame.

And if you want to get a bit more cartoony, "Action! Cartooning" and "Fantasy! Cartooning" by Ben Caldwell are better purchases than Christopher Hart's books. They suffer some of the same writing flaws, but Caldwell is definitely a superior artist compared to Hart.

If you'd really like to give this book a more thorough look I would suggest seeing if your local library has it or thumb through it at a bookstore. It is ultimately up to the buyer and aspiring artist to determine if this book will be of any use to them. However, I would personally advise against buying any of these niche books - especially those by Christopher Hart. Drawing any subject, be it fantastic or mundane, is a process of learning to observe, training the hand to produce what is in the world and in the mind, and practice practice practice. The Christopher Hart books attempt to cash in on those looking for shortcuts and easy fixes to drawing a particular subject or style, but true artists learn to do that by taking the fundamental principles of art and adapting them through observation of another artist's style or crafting their own unique fantasy and sci-fi characters and creatures. Many aspiring "manga/anime" artists don't realize that the true professional creators of the anime and manga they enjoy first learned to draw realistically and learned the basics as any art student would. Then they later took these fundamentals and adapted them into a more stylized approach.

There is no substitute for learning the fundamentals of art and illustration before you begin to focus on particular subjects and styles. No book will provide easy shortcuts that will do anything but hinder your artistic development. In short, no book will replace hard work and practice. Rather than throwing money away on this book, check out the resources at your library, look through books at stores, and look at resources online developed by communities of artists. (For example, Ben Caldwell has a forum where many learning, amateur, and even professional cartoonists share drawings, discussions, and ideas.)

NOT A Book For Furries (or How to Draw Them)

This is not a book for people who want to learn to draw furries, let alone a book for people who want to learn to draw. It's flawed, and I feel that the author has no idea what furries are, let alone how to properly draw them. More than that, the book has some serious errors. Look at the previews provided by Amazon. Notably, look at the illustration on page 12. The human-hybrid at the bottom of the page stands on plantigrade legs (bi-pedal, straight human-like legs), yet his left leg's tibia is curved at an awkward, bizarre angle. Unless you have scurvy your legs really should not bend like that. The author tried to cover them up with pants, but there would still be a proper line where the leg's form would be, not curved in concave. Go do a search for tibia/legs. They do not bend that way, and you should NOT buy a book wherein such a huge anatomical flaw is present within the first few pages.

I could go into more flaws, but this review would end up 10X as long. Just ask yourself if you want a "how to draw" book by somebody who has glaring anatomical flaws. This will not help you learn, but hinder you.

If you want to draw furries all you really need are two things: solid books on human anatomy (90% of drawing a furry is drawing people) and a good book on drawing animals. Replace a head, add in a tail... bam. Mix and match parts, and experiment. Drawing furries are ridiculously easy. There really is no "trick" to drawing furries, and you'd be better off spending you money on books that focus on anatomy (which is, at its base, one of the most important parts of figure drawing). If you really want to spice things up, look for books on drawing monsters or dragons (I recommend the Dragonart series by Jessica "Neondragon" Peffer here on Amazon). Those are good books with great examples, and they'll you far better.

Drawing furries is fun, but you'd be better off spending your money on other, better resources.

to full animal style furry focused

it has a lot of furries with animal style faces but not many with human style faces & animal features. there is a zebra girl on the back of the book that has the more human style but you probably only see about one or two more actually like her in the book. there is also a lot of furries in the book without guides on how to draw them. not that impressive a book for learning but it is good book for more looney tune style furries or so.

Good reference but not exhaustive

A good text. It was required for a graduate level course on handling missing data. The professor has also opted to use a portion of an additional textbook with some more modern techniques not addressed in this book such as pattern mixture models. But this is a great intro to the topic. I will say, however, some of the problems are vague and poorly explained. Computationally they are not too difficult, but trying to figure out exactly what they are asking is sometimes tough.

Cautious and applicable

I'm working with data sets where up to 15% of measurements are unusable. If I'm going to get any results at all, I have to get them despite the lost values.
This book provides a huge library of techniques for working around the holes, as well as techniques for filling them in. This is not a cut-and-paste text for programmers - it gives the basic theory and algorithms for each technique. Still, the presentation is quite readable and fairly easy to put into practice.
The book's emphasis is on imputation - filling in values so that analysis can move forward. This is something to approach with real caution, though. The imputed (synthesized) values must not perturb the analysis, so the imputation must differ according to the analysis being performed. The authors present a variety of imputation techniques, as well as bootstrap, jacknife, and other techniques for measuring the quality of the results.
The authors also dedicate chapters to approaches that work only with available data, and to cases where missing data can not simply be ignored.
This is the most thorough and practical guide I know to handling missing data. In an ideal world, experiments would all produce usable results and surveys would all have every question answered. When you have to deal with reality, though, this is the book.

About the Author
ABBAS ALI MIRZA is a partner with Deloitte & Touche (ME) based in Dubai. He has had a distinguished career in accounting and auditing internationally, is a frequent speaker at major global conferences, and has held many positions of repute in the accounting profession globally, including Chairman of the 21st session of the United Nations' Intergovernmental Working Group of Experts on International Accounting and Reporting (ISAR) at UNCTAD in Geneva.

GRAHAM J. HOLT is Principal Lecturer of Accounting and Finance at the Manchester Metropolitan University Business School in the United Kingdom. He is coauthor of an IFRS text, contributor to academic publications, author of professional journal papers, and examiner for the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), UK.

MAGNUS ORRELL is in the national office of Deloitte & Touche LLP in the United States. He specializes in the accounting for financial instruments under both IFRS and U.S. GAAP and has extensive international experience of accounting and reporting issues relating to financial instruments and financial institutions from his time as project manager for financial instruments at IASB.

Brilliant Book!!!

This is the first book that really explains IFRS very well. The examples are understandable, it's comprehensive and helps on nearly every issue that might arise when dealing with IFRS.

Not value for money

The book looks to be a summary of the original IFRS text issued by IASB with elementary questions and examples and that too very few. I expected comprehensive disclosure examples and lots of multiple chaoice questions from elementary to highest level. IFRS being a disclosure based standard, the book should contain comprehensive disclosure examples for all permutations and combinations to the maximum possible extent
