Decoding Doomsday: The 2012 Prophecies, the Apocalypse, and the Perilous Days Ahead, by Doug Woodward

Do megalithic monuments and books of ancient wisdom predict the date the world ends? Dozens of books have been published on the topic of 2012, mostly reflecting a "new age" perspective, proposing that their "pop" point of view is authoritative and reliable. This opinion is shaped by Mayan scholars, pseudo-archeologists, channelers, mediums, shamans, and alternative historians. Likewise, these pundits draw upon ancient sources which range from the Mayan calendar, the I Ching, The Kolbrin Bible, to Plato's Atlantis. The key to our future appears connected to the study of the past. However, upon a deeper look, today's pop apocalyptic writers continue an esoteric tradition thousands of years in the making. Is there a common thread running through the meaning of monuments, alien abductions, UFOs, crop circles, the New Age Movement, conspiracy theories, Freemasonry, and Pyramidology? Decoding Doomsday argues that by studying the claims of the 2012 enthusiasts in light of apocalyptic history, we can make sense of the current clamor. Furthermore, flying in the face of conventional wisdom, the author asserts that the expectation of the Apocalypse can actually be a healthy concern, essential to the position of authentic Christianity. Finally, he maintains Doomsday is already decoded. History's last day is plainly disclosed in the Bible.

Why is it important to read this book
By Robert L. Nelson
Doug Woodward brings a whole fresh way to look at what is a complex emotional topic. Both his books have a unique un-judgmental way of unravelling the manifold views on this topic. He gives clear options for the reader to decide on what he or she feels is right, without bias. Doug's own opinion is quite clear but he allows us readers to understand why other opinions have developed. I recommend this book ++++ for all who want to understand the times we live in.
Thanks Doug for a very great work

Coin Locker Babies, by Ryu Murakami

A surreal coming-of-age tale that establishes Ryu Murakami as one of the most inventive young writers in the world today.

Abandoned at birth in adjacent train station lockers, two troubled boys spend their youth in an orphanage and with foster parents on a semi-deserted island before finally setting off for the city to find and destroy the women who first rejected them. Both are drawn to an area of freaks and hustlers called Toxitown. One becomes a bisexual rock singer, star of this exotic demimonde, while the other, a pole vaulter, seeks his revenge in the company of his girlfriend, Anemone, a model who has converted her condominium into a tropical swamp for her pet crocodile.

Together and apart, their journey from a hot metal box to a stunning, savage climax is a brutal funhouse ride through the eerie landscape of late-twentieth-century Japan.

From Publishers Weekly
The third of this prolific Japanese author's 30 novels to appear in English, this is a cyber-Bildungsroman of playful breadth and uncertain depth. Two mothers abandon their infant boys in the Yokohama train station's coin lockers. The reader is not spared the mechanics of packaging a child in a parcel, nor the grim details of any of the other episodes of discomfort and suffering which follow in incremental doses, though always with such whimsy that the reader wonders whether or not to be offended. The heroes, Kiku and Hashi, grow up together; but, beyond their bizarre beginnings, they couldn't be more different. Kiku becomes a homicidal pole-vaulter whose inner rage gives him unusual speed and strength, but which also fosters an obsession with murder and a secret drug that sets any creature into a killing frenzy. The more delicate Hashi strives to find his mother, supporting himself as a prostitute in Toxitown?a chemical disaster zone insulated from Tokyo by a wall and armed guards?until one of his johns discovers his musical talent and makes him a star. The settings seem lifted from Japanese animation epics: an abandoned mining town, an underwater tunnel and a retreat in the mountains. At times, Murakami rambles, as in the case of a taxi driver's pointless monologue or the long interviews with women who might be Hashi's mother. Such digressions, however, are less the product of careless craft than of a lush and frantic imagination overwhelming its own project. Though expansive and exciting as its scope, the novel is as unfocused as its troubled heroes.

From Library Journal
In 69 (LJ 9/15/93) Murakami's last novel published in English, the prevailing tone was one of hip innocence. In Coin Locker Babies, any hint of innocence is decidedly absent. The coin locker babies of the title are two abandoned infants rescued from train station lockers, and the novel follows their adventures through boyhood into manhood. They wander through the sort of hellish, surreal landscape usually associated with dismal sf visions of the future, but in this book the hell is contemporary Japan. The journeys of the two are relentlessly dark and disturbing: matricide, violent sex, mutilation, vengeance, insanity, perversion, and mass destruction are all explored, usually graphically and with relish. The work of Murakami?who is also a filmmaker?begs comparison with film. Robocop comes to mind as bearing the closest resemblance to this novel, although the book lacks the satiric edge that many claimed to have found in that film. Large collections with a particular interest in contemporary fiction may find a place for this. Otherwise, it is not recommended.?Mark Woodhouse, Elmira Coll. Lib., N.Y.

Engaging look at the effects of adoption, even in Japan
By Dolce Bellezza
I first heard of this book when Michael Wong, of Ideagist, visited my Japanese Literature Challenge 2 blog and asked me if I had a copy. I told him I'd buy him one, which I did, but when it arrived from amazon.com I had to see what it was about. After reading a few pages, I ordered him another, and sat down to immerse myself in this story.

Like so much Japanese literature I've read, there's a quality of fantasy that's hard to put one's finger on. Is it the author's imagination run wild? Or, as in a John Irving novel, is the bizarre not so bizarre after all? Somehow, after the first hundred or so pages, the reader doesn't even mind if strange creatures come into the characters' lives, or absurd thoughts present themselves to the characters' stream of consciousness. It all seems perfectly natural, somehow, in a piece of well written literature.

Coin Locker Babies is about two babies who are abandoned by their mothers in train station coin lockers. "Two troubled boys spend their youth in an orphanage and with foster parents on a semi-deserted island before finally setting off for the city to find and destroy the women who first rejected them. Both are drawn to an area of freaks and hustlers called Toxitown. One becomes a bisexual rock singer, star of this exotic demi-monde, while the other, a pole vaulter, seeks his revenge in the company of his girlfriend, Anemone, a model who has converted her condominium into a tropical swamp for her pet crocodile. Together and apart, their journey from a hot metal box to a stunning, savage climax is a brutal funhouse ride through the eerie landscape of late-twentieth-century Japan." (front cover flap)

The theme of abandonment, and the pain that causes, runs throughout this novel. Regardless of culture, or life style choices, the distress which comes from knowing that their mother has left them becomes almost unbearable for these two young men. We see their choices, most of them which are self-destructive, in their pursuit for self-acceptance. Secondary, to me, was the plot line which in itself is enthralling; I chose to dwell on their emotional aspects first rather than the physical ones.

This novel looks at what it means to be a child and an abandoned one at that. It is heartbreaking and insightful, especially to those readers who may have been adopted themselves. Regardless of culture, regardless of age, regardless of reason, being adopted is painful. Yet there is comfort in exploring the issue, in knowing that other adoptees have similar feelings.

I found this an incredibly profound work, as well as a fascinating look into the Japanese world.

The strange and fun journey through the lives of two boys abandoned in train station coin lockers at birth. More engaging story than Almosy
Transparent
Blue, the only other Ryu Murakami book I've read, although the language (possibly because of translation) isn't at the same level.

Ultimately uplifting
By Henry Platte
I put off reading this book for a long time because I thought, from reading the cover, that I knew exactly what it was going to be like; snide, hip and cynical, and hopelessly depressing. It is all of those things to a degree, but it's amazing in that despite its relentless depiction of casual violence, squalor and destruction, Coin Locker Babies still manages to be deeply human at every turn.
Sympathy is developed first of all for the main characters, who seem completley justified in their bitterness and eccentricty; the book first follows their twisted yet idyllic childhood with their foster parents on an island. The foster parents, painfully ordinary people, are treated with much more tact than I expected. At different points, the mother and the father each express regret that they failed to be better parents; the moments are touching and redeeming.
The psychology in this book, though spotty at times (because some of the characters are just so bizzare), is accurate in that the signficance of it is considered. While Kiku and Hashi might be dramatic and larger-than-life, their dependance on each other and on their foster parents, and their complicated attitudes towards the mothers who left them to die, keep showing through. The relationship between the bisexual Hashi and his wife is also very convincing; that between Kiku and his girlfriend less so, though.
The author also doesn't neglect scenery, or the small, basically irrelevant details which add charm to a narrative. There's a host of loveable minor characters, the best of them convicted murderers, who become in time as sympathetic as Hashi and Kiku. In the end, also, the message is tentatively optomistic, holding up the decree YOU MUST LIVE in the face of disaster. This is one of the most complex, engaging and endearing contemporary novels I've come across, and shows that there may be hope even for this frenetic, disillusioned generation.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Dornenberg and Page's follow up to their award-winning What to Drink With What You Eat certainly compliments its predecessor (part of the intent), but works equally well as a standalone reference for cooks of all skill levels. An alphabetical index of flavors and ingredients, the book allows readers to search complimentary combinations for a particular ingredient (over 70 flavors go well with chickpeas; over 100 are listed for oranges), emphasizing the classics (chives with eggs, nutmeg with cream, sardines and olive oil, etc.). Entries for ingredients such as chicken, beets and lamb span multiple pages and feature menu items from chefs such as Grant Achatz of Alinea, Alred Portale of Gotham Bar and Grill and Le Bernardin's Eric Ripert. Regional tastes are well-represented in broad entries for classic German and English flavors, as well as the more fine-tuned flavors of, for example, northern France or West Africa. The listings, combinations and short essays from various chefs on different matches are meant to inspire rather than dictate-there are, in fact, no recipes included. Instead, the volume is meant as a jumping-off point for those comfortable in the kitchen and eager to explore; though experienced cooks and chefs will benefit most, novices will find themselves referring to this handsome volume again and again as their confidence grows. From Booklist
Creative, self-motivated cooks who don’t demand recipes’ precise prescriptions will cheer the publication of this guide to the kingdom of taste. Addressing the nature of flavor and its role in cooking, the authors have gathered creativity and wisdom from dozens of the world’s best chefs. Page and Dornenburg define the aesthetic of flavor as a combination of taste, mouthfeel, aroma, and a mysterious factor perceived by the other senses and by the diner’s emotions. They then break down in hundreds of tables how ingredients’ flavors relate to one another. For example, the table for apples notes their affinity for cinnamon, pork, rum, and nuts. They also list the most common ingredients of national cuisines. In some cases, they note clashes, such as oysters and tarragon. This is a valuable reference for all aspiring chefs and sets down in print what has often been believed inexpressible. --Mark Knoblauch

An extraordinary book!
By BJ
I recently added this book to my cookbook collection, which numbers more than 1,000 volumes (probably more like 1200 but I'm still cataloging). It has immediately become one of my favorites (and definitely my #1 favorite in English). If you are a serious cook, love to read cookbooks like novels, and view recipes as suggestions rather than as requiring strict adherence to precise measurements, then this is the book for you! (Did I say I LOVE this book?)

I make all of the desserts for my husband's restaurant. If I snag some particularly luscious fruit and want to make it into a dessert, this is the book I reach for first. I don't WANT to be told how to make a fruit sorbet. I already know how. But I love having a list of suggested flavors and products that go with what I already have. It's like having an uber-creative friend at your side saying "hey, why not try THIS?"

And if you are not an experienced cook, this book provides invaluable guidance that a recipe book never could. It is wholly different from every food book I have ever read.

The book is clever, useful, and obviously the product of prodigious research. To the authors, I send my humble gratitude. You have made my life immeasurably easier, and my dishes far more interesting than ever before.

This book is a must-read if you love to eat or love to cook. I have already bought six copies and have given two as gifts. It's THAT good.

I love this book, even though its not really a book!
By G. C.
It's more of a compendium of alphabetical listings of foods that are paired together. The format basically goes something like this:

Blueberries
Season: spring-summer
Taste: sour-sweet
Botanical relatives: huckleberries
Weight: light
Volume: quiet-moderate
Techniques: cooked, raw
Tips: Can subtitute huckleberries

allspice
almonds
apricots
bananas
blackberries
butter, unsalted
buttermilk
chocolate, white
CINNAMON
cinnamon basil
cloves...

It is like a book that is a giant index, which refers you to things that can pair well. This book is more for people who have a willingness to experiment. It gives pointers on what other people think might go good with an item, such as blueberries. You have to figure out your own proportions. Of course, responsible cooks probably want to taste the food they serve beforehand anyways. ;)

Flavor, because you can't live on Bread and Water alone
By Christopher Hernandez
Flavor is the basis for all food, without it, the world would seem less colorful, lifeless, and bland. Food isn't just about what you can taste in your mouth but also what you can see with your eyes, what you smell with your nose and what you feel in your heart. That's what is presented in this book. (The authors wrote two other acclaimed books, Culinary Artistry and What to Drink with What You Eat.)

Culinary Artistry showcased was that food can be art. That colors structure on a plate can evoke emotions the same as any other art work. And like any art work, is in the eye of the beholder.

What to Drink with What You Eat gave us the understanding that beverages (not just wine) can be paired and should be thought of as a condiment rather than an afterthought

The Flavor Bible talks about, well, flavor; but more then that, it talks about what flavor is and how we perceive it, receive it, balance it and emphasize it. All coming to the climax which is a very in depth list (3/4ths of the book) of ingredients detailing its profile (weak, strong), seasonality, and every herb, spice, fruit, vegetable, meat, fish, poultry and alcoholic related item and what would go exceptionally well with it.

So, if it is so good, why did I give it only 4 stars? The list for the most part is just an update from Culinary Artistry; most flavor companions haven't change since the days of Escoffier. The "new" list does give mention of the seasonality of produce and also the break down of different cuts of meat such as beef, lamb, pork, and poultry into their respected parts and given their own listings.

Culinary Artistry was my best friend going through culinary school and now I have a great addition that I am sure I'll end up burning through as well. I look to this book every time I cook to add that extra something to a dish. So if you are even the slightest bit interested in cooking or making good food taste even better then you can't go wrong buying this book.

This is a terrible textbook. I can feel my brain cells dying off as I read it. There are typing errors throughout and the 'figures' are extremely pointless.

The Kindle version is more expensive than the print version. The Kindle rental costs more than the Kindle purchase. Is this supposed to be some crazy lesson in business to the suckers who have to buy this book for school? At least it is a crystal clear version of the book. The publisher lets your rent etext of the book for very cheap, but it looks like a blurry scan of the book and every page is watermarked. It gave me a headache to read it. Spend the extra $30 and buy it here.

Easy to Read and Understand
By Michael
I'm only a few chapters in so far, but I'm really enjoying the textbook so far. The writing, layout, and real-world examples make it quite easy for me to read and digest. I really like that the jargon is all clearly defined in the margins, because it makes taking notes much more simple. Some of my other textbooks only contain definitions in the very back of the book, requiring me to spend quite a bit more time putting together my notes.

Amazon.com Review

Amazon Exclusive: A Q&A with Jennifer A. Nielsen

Question: What inspired you to write The False Prince?

Nielsen: I’d had the general idea for The False Prince for some time, but could never find the right protagonist to carry the weight of the story I wanted to tell. The central character, Sage, was found in the words of a song called Guaranteed, by the great Eddie Vedder. It said, “I knew all the rules, but the rules did not know me, guaranteed.” From that line, I had the instant image of a defiant but charismatic boy who always stays a step ahead of the game, and where other players have no clue that all the rules are very quietly being rewritten.

Q: Where did Sage’s voice come from?

Nielsen: Sage came to me as a complete character, as fully developed as if he had been a real person. So writing The False Prince wasn’t really about creating him, but instead, it was the experience of discovering him as the story unfolded. There were several moments when I knew what was waiting for Sage if he didn’t back down, and yet, he never would. So I gritted my teeth and let things unfold the only way they could with him. As I work on the sequels, he continues to surprise, amuse, and shock me. He’s the most complex character I’ve ever written, and I’m always thrilled to get feedback from readers who are as fascinated by him as I am.

Q: Was the setting or any of the other characters inspired by real people or places?

Nielsen: Sage is very much his own person, and as a whole, is completely unique. However, there is one trait of his that I borrowed from a student I had when I was a high school debate teacher years ago. He was popular, brilliant, charming, and an amazingly talented thief. At the start of every ride to a tournament, he would steal the watch off of the bus driver’s wrist, then keep it for the entire trip. As he left the bus at the end, he would hand the watch back to the driver, explaining it must have fallen to the floor. Then the driver always thanked him for being such a great and honest kid. I should’ve been angry, but I never was – he just pulled off his scams that well

Q: Where do you like to go to write?

Nielsen: I’ll write anywhere. I work out scenes in my head while driving or in the shower, and pick up inspiration from events I notice each day. I try to always keep a pen and extra paper handy so that if something occurs to me I can write it down and not risk losing it (I hate it when I know there was something I thought of earlier that I had loved, but now can’t remember it!). My favorite places for actual writing aren’t very exciting. I love to write curled up on a loveseat beneath a sunny window. And nearly every night I’ll print out pages I’ve worked on in the day and edit them in bed before I fall asleep.

Q: Have you always wanted to be a writer? When did you first know this is what you wanted to do?

Nielsen: I’ve written for as long as I can remember, but the idea that I could turn that into a career never seemed real to me. I never knew any authors growing up, and as far as I could tell, they were mythical people who lived like the Great Gatsby on the other side of the country, or who had lived a hundred years ago. So I wrote as a hobby, then planned on other careers that real people had, such as being a detective, or working somewhere in the theater, or being a teacher.

That all changed after my oldest child was born and I stayed home to care for him. Suddenly, I had a lot more time on my hands, which I filled with reading. But it wasn’t long before the stories in my head became more interesting than the books in my hand, and I realized that I wanted to hold a book of my own. That was when I decided to seriously pursue writing as a career. It’s the perfect place for me to be now, and I can’t imagine being happier anywhere else.

From Booklist
This first book in a planned trilogy is action-oriented fantasy, but don’t expect magical creatures. Instead, it revolves around political intrigue (à la Megan Whalen Turner’s The Thief, 1996). Sage is a street-savvy orphan, and along with two other boys he is recruited by Conner, a nobleman who wants to remake them in the image of their country’s lost prince, a victim of pirates and presumed dead. The task is urgent, as the rest of the royal family has been murdered and civil war seems imminent. As the boys, chosen for their passing resemblance to Prince Jaron, compete to assume a new identity and the throne, Sage discovers some unpleasant truths about their host, beyond his treasonous plans to pass one of them off as royalty. Sage is a likable hero full of smart-alecky snarkiness. Especially appealing are the friendships he forges: one with his bodyguard and teacher; another with a mute serving girl. Though lacking in subtlety, Nielsen’s plot twists keep coming, and readers will want to see how they play out as Sage’s adventures continue. Grades 4-7. --Karen Cruze

Brilliantly Executed from Start to Finish
By Wendy Sparrow
I keep searching for the words to describe how the layers carefully crafted in this book came together. Earlier today, I bought this book after seeing it compared to both Hunger Games and Harry Potter. A lofty and impossible comparison I thought. No way. Then, I heard from one of my daughter's friends that it was a---maz--ing. (The word had more than three syllables, I kid you not. Possibly seven syllables.)

So, I thought that I'd just check it out before passing it on to my daughter, but I couldn't put it down. I just finished it after reading it in one straight sitting.

The layer-upon-layer build in this book was brilliant. Every little detail felt like it was leading somewhere to something. The author used an unreliable narrator--you knew that the first person narration was hiding more than he was revealing. Every so often, you'd catch a hint of this and it would drag you breathless through more pages as you waited for the reveal that was building and building.

I thought there was no way it could live up to the internal hype I was creating. Telling me a book is like either Harry Potter or Hunger Games is dooming me to disappointment--I thought. This book delivered on this promise. I liked how it kept me guessing because I knew there was something that I didn't know...some big secret that all these smaller secrets and hints were leading to. I kept mentally guessing...and I was completely wrong and the ending blew me away.

It's not really like Harry Potter--though Sage is clever, young (14 or 15), and wonderfully imperfect and the writing is equally as brilliant.

It's not quite like Hunger Games, but it kept me reading with the same anxious anticipation. It was more hopeful and the end of this first book more satisfying. It was also significantly less violent in my opinion.

It was somewhat like Eragon with the intelligence of Ender's Game with a narration that reminded me of Odd Thomas. But, wait, it wasn't like any of them--it was just itself and it was exceptional.

Also, of note, this may be a book in a series, but this book can stand alone. The ending was enough even if I'm anxious to read another book in the series. This book felt complete and not just a portion of a series. That feels like a rare thing these days in YA books.

For Parents: there was no profanity, adult situations, or gratuitous violence. As far as violence goes, if you felt comfortable letting your child read Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire--this is comparable.

Good Book To Read Along With Your Kids
By Robin Snyder
Sage is a classic rapscallion, I don’t get to use that word enough, I mean when we meet him he is running through the city trying to keep a hold of a slippery roast he just stole. The kid has a quick tongue that always seems to get him into as much trouble as it gets him out of and he seems to have a little problem gift with sticky fingers.

He seems like an industrious young orphan on the brink of being on his own until someone shows up and makes him an offer he literally can’t turn down. It seems like Sage will be in a competition with a few other boys, the prize is initially unclear but it soon becomes apparent that to lose would be very dangerous. So Sage must learn everything he can in two weeks or possibly not make it out of this situation alive

***Master Graves was incensed and said, as punishment for my disruption, I would have to write my letters an extra ten times that day.
“Ten times the better I’ll know them, then,” I said. “How strange that you should punish me by ensuring I come out more educated than Roden, who has tried to obey you.”***

Middle Grade books are fun to read sometimes because I don’t have to put a ton of thought into them. This story is really readable. Sage and his discordant ways are easily likable and I enjoyed how he turned every obstacle into an advantage. He plays people off each other well and is as stubborn as a rock when he sets his mind on something no matter the consequences he must pay.

As an adult I guessed many of the twists that the book had coming in it. There were still a couple of surprises but not as many as there probably would have been if I was a younger reader. That didn’t stop it from being enjoyable though and I sped my way through the story very easily.

I didn’t only like Sage I also became attached to a few of the other characters like Hobb and Imogen. The friendships that Sage built with them along the way were some that I know will play out more in the upcoming books. There is a cute inkling of a romance with Imogen but it was totally age appropriate and it was refreshing to have something stay so innocent.

Even though this is a trilogy this first book wraps up nicely as a standalone. The Chapters are short so it is really good for reading aloud to your family.

Overall - If you have kids and are looking for something to read with them that won’t bore you to tears. Or if you are like me and enjoy a good fun MG fantasy every now and again with interesting characters then this should be perfect for your needs.

BEST. BOOK. EVER.
By Amazon Customer
Jennifer A. Nielsen is possibly one of the most talented authors to ever walk on the earth. The amazing plot and writing techniques of this book (and trilogy) made the decision easy to declare it my new favorite series-more than worthy of it being a #1 New York Times Bestseller. I've officially read The False Prince 4 times, and intend to read it again in the near future. The witty replies, unforgettable plot twists, and (thank you thank you thank you!!!) clean language make it a book you'll find it impossible to put down- even after the very last word. I really did almost cry when I finished the last book of the series. No, I didn't want it to end! Sage, Jaron, and the other characters in the story will forever live on in my heart :) yes, I'm that much of a nerd.

Very Disappointing
By Voiceguy
I bought this book with high hopes after reading all the breathlessly enthusiastic reviews that appear here. As soon as it arrived, I set aside some serious time to read it and profit from all the promised help. I started at the beginning and pressed on, looking for all the helpful guidance that other reviewers had mentioned.

By the time I got to page 37, I discovered ... there is no "there" there. Or at least, not for me. Further delving into the book did not improve things.

I honestly have no idea what Pamela Jaye Smith is getting at in this book. It is a catalog of very brief observations of the most superficial nature on a bewilderingly wide array of topics from comparing American foreign policy in Bosnia versus Darfur in one section to discussing arcane aspects of Eastern medicine in another. I would concede that it is a fairly thorough collection (in breadth) of just about anything conceivably touching on the idea of "bad" or "evil" in the world, but it's like opening a Sears catalog without knowing what one wants to buy, and with only the briefest descriptions of the merchandise.

It could be that someone who read all of the entries and mentally digested them might somehow be inspired to pick one particular kind of approach to use -- but what an incredible amount of work to get to that point. And once a specific approach was picked, that person would discover that the book offered only fairly shallow and self-evident suggestions on what to do with that approach.

I prefer books that offer a practical approach that doesn't require learning how to build a complete watch from scratch when I just want to tell the time. For a working writer who is looking for help in making their creative process move ahead more smoothly, this book is not a good candidate, because whatever value there may be in it is just too hard to extract.

Unexplained Terms & Too Referential
By Tara E. Browne
Not my favorite writing reference ever.

1) The author relies heavily on strings of movie names in support of her points, then fails to explain how those movies demonstrate the point in question. The examples provided are useless unless you have seen the movies in question.

2) The book continually references "chakra" terminology (described as "inner drive / center of motivation"), but nowhere does the author offer an overview of the chakra system for the uninitiated.

3) The book meanders off topic. As often as not, the author is discusses how "good guys" display and/or respond to the "dark side" traits, rather than focusing on how to develop really strong villains that will drive a story forward.

4) Finally, one does wish her writing would be less sloppy. Sentence fragments, misplaced modifiers and other symptoms of lazy writing pepper the entire manuscript, and add to the overall impression that the work was not well planned or edited.

Take a journey to the Dark Side - you won't be disappointed
By Matthew Terry
Someone once said that "All art comes from within your soul." At least I think someone said it. Someone SHOULD have said it. Okay, I've said it. Let's move on.

If art comes from the soul, YOUR soul, how do you justify or relate to those characters that are dark and, well, possibly evil? Where DO these people/creatures/characters come from? Your soul?

Through all my years of teaching and reading and writing, a common theme has floated to the surface: To have a good protagonist, you must have a great ANTAGONIST. If there's no Darth Vader, what of Luke? If there's no Goldfinger, what of Bond? If there's no Witch, what of Dorothy? If there's no Scut Farkus, what of Ralphie?

The problem with most books and classes, etc. is that they have a tendency to focus on the "sweetness and light" - the journey of your hero. And then they do a mediocre nod to the villain. I know that I do. It's so much fun to place your hero on their journey but who wants to deal with the evil one, the Sauron to Frodo?

Pamela Jaye Smith is the one who wants to deal with "the evil one." The Antagonist. The villain upon which our hero must stand against.

But who are your villains? Are they easily recognizable? Ms. Smith does a great job defining all sorts of villains from the evil witch to the corrupt politician. From the dictator to the teenage clique. If you haven't even begun to think of your villain (and their underlings or toadies) then this book is for you. If you've got a villain but the worst thing they do is rip the tags off of mattresses, then this book is for you. Ms. Smith takes you there, to the dark side, in a very readable way.

Is your story "technology gone awry?" Is it "average Joe" against the "establishment." Is it "you" versus "the world?" In all these scenarios you will need a villain or, most likely, villains. Even if that villain is yourself (and, yes, she writes about self destruction, too).

But just when you think this is a book all about those to whom your character cannot win - she also writes about the tools your hero needs TO win.

She also includes an excellent bibliography, list of websites and a glossary to help you delve a little deeper.

My only real issue with the book is that, though she gives hundreds of little examples through all sorts of genres, I would have liked a step-by-step focus on one particular film and how the hero (or heroes) battles and overcomes the villain (or villains). "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy would have been an excellent example as it deals with all sorts of villains (from Sauron to Saruman, to Frodo's inner voice craving the power of the ring, to Gollem the "Hobbit gone bad") and heroes (Gandalf, Aragorn, Boromir, etc. and their own internal and external struggles).

Years ago I was reading a student's script. He had a very strong protagonist but nothing resembling an antagonist. When a crisis happened later in the script I casually suggested to him that maybe the hero was the one who actually instigated the crisis. He would not hear it at all. His protagonist had to be pure and wonderful and beautiful - he did not want shades of gray. The script suffered because of it.

Pamela Jaye Smith's great book helps you find those shades of gray and, if you're looking for it, the deep darkness, too.

The diabetes mellitus bible
By Jennifer
I am a freelance medical writer, and use this book as a reference when I'm working on diabetes projects. This is "the" textbook for diabetes mellitus. Like other medical textbooks, the language is very technical and scientific, therefore I would steer away people without a medical background who are looking to better understand diabetes (eg, patients).
