The Greek Wars: The Failure of Persia, by George Cawkwell

The Greek Wars treats the whole course of Persian relations with the Greeks from the coming of Cyrus in the 540s down to Alexander the Great's defeat of Darius III in 331 B.C. . Cawkwell discusses from a Persian perspective major questions such as why Xerxes' invasion of Greece failed, and how important a part the Great King played in Greek affairs in the fourth century. Cawkwell's views are at many points original: in particular, his explanation of how and why the Persian invasion of Greece failed challenges the prevailing orthodoxy, as does his view of the importance of Persia in Greek affairs for the two decades after the King's Peace. Persia, he concludes, was destroyed by Macedonian military might but moral decline had no part in it; the Macedonians who had subjected Greece were too good an army, but their victory was not easy.

A thorough reassessment of traditionally held beliefs about Greek-Persian relations...This work joins the serious works on Achaemenid history that scholars must consult Matthew Walters, Journal of the American Oriental Society For Achaemenid specialists from a classical background, non-Greek material has an exotic allure - and a greater potential for producing genuinely new evidence. Incredible
By Kirialax
This book should be the standard text on the Greco-Persian wars for years to come. Cawkwell has constructed a masterpiece by drawing on ancient sources and modern research with a very critical eye. His research is meticulously cited and approached from many angles, examining everything from logistics to the shape of the hulls of Phoenician warships. It is nothing short of a masterpiece of careful historical research.

Still, I have a couple of caveats. This book is not for the layman. Half of the book is appendices dealing with technical aspects of the war, and probably very boring for someone looking for a scholarly narrative of the period. Also, Cawkwell constructs his ideas over the course of long paragraphs, often with a twist at the end, so it is very important that this book is read with your full attention.

This book is full of solid research and should be the standard work in the field for many years to come. However, it is highly technical and written for other scholars. If you're looking for an advanced piece of work, get this. Otherwise, you're best off looking somewhere else.

First class scholarship, but not for “beginners”
By JPS
This is a rather fascinating book on the Greco-Persian wars and the relations between Greece and the Persian Empire from the mid-sixth century BC right up to and included the conquest of Alexander the Great.

The (relative) originality of the book is to insist on the Persian point of view, showing, as others have also done, to what extent the Greek sources on which historians have somewhat over relied have been misleading. In some cases, as the author shows, this was more or less deliberate and reflected a mixture of propaganda and ideology. In particular, the “Greeks”, that is the handful of cities including two of the largest ones (Athens and Sparta) that fought against Persia did not win because they were “morally superior” and “fighting for freedom”. In some cases also, the Greek sources did not necessarily know very well what they were writing about. In particular, the author shows that Herodotus seems to have known relatively little (to put it in a nicer way than those George Cawkwell) about the Persian Empire.

Regarding the sources, the author quite obviously has his preferences. He thinks little of both Herodotus and Xenophon and does not miss an occasion to demonstrate that the former often did not know what he was writing about and was rather confusing whereas the later was so biased and pro-Spartan that he would become misleading and disingenuous, omitting crucial elements that he must have known about from his narrative. On the other hand, he is full of praise for Thucydides, at least most of the time because he also uncovers and discusses a couple of areas where he also misinterpreted the facts, whether deliberately or not. The author’s points are well argued, including when he demonstrates the limits of each source. However, the way and the tone that he uses make him also somewhat biased, and at times even a bit venomous: I almost got the impression, at times, that he had personal scores to settle with Herodotus or Xenophon!

The author's cases are also well argued and this is a piece of first class scholarship. The annexes are particularly convincing. One of them shows the reliance that the Persian Empire on the Phoenician squadrons. It shows, among other elements, that the Greeks could not match the heavier and better trained Phoenician squadrons that made up the crack units of the Persian fleet and that this explains to a large extent the naval battles of both Artemission (at best a draw for the Greeks) and the Greeks’ refusal to fight anywhere else than at Salamis. A second very valuable insight is to show that the Persian army and Persian general ship, both largely mocked by subsequent Greek authors, were in fact quite formidable. They also show to what extent the Greek victories resulted from making the Persians unable to use their fearsome cavalry (such was the case, the author believes, at Marathon) that the Greeks could not match, and that the battle of Plataea, which the author believes to be the decisive encounter, was a close run thing. He even shows that the invasion of the Persian Empire by Alexander, however successful it turned out to be, was not easy and that both Memnon of Rhodes and Darius III turned out to be worthy adversaries. In particular, and although both ended in glorious victories, the battles of Issus and Gaugamela were more closely fought that it is generally believed.

Another key feature of this book is to the show that even after evacuating Greece and renouncing to conquer it, The Great King and his Empire simply did not enter into decline and were far from finished. In fact, the book shows to what extent the Great Kings were able to play the Greeks against each other, first Sparta against Athens, then Thebes against either Athens or Sparta or even both. Their main aim was to maintain their domination on the Geek coastal cities of Asia Minor and in this they were largely successful. Their main tool in doing so was financing one or the other side to tip the scales in its favour and essentially extract concessions without having to commit their own forces.

One problem with this book, however, is that it is very “scholarly”. By this I mean that it is full of the notes that you can expect in such a work (with the notes clustered at the end of each chapter). Some readers will also find it difficult to read in at least two respects. One is that the author discusses rather systematically and, at times, in intricate detail, each and every issue. Another is that the book is written in such a way that he often assumes that you already have a good grasp of the almost 200 years that are covered, or even that you have a good knowledge of the sources that are discussed. In other words, this is not an introduction, an overview or a starting point for someone who knows little about the Greeks or Persia, despite the quality of the scholarship involved. Four stars.

Excellent work not for the armchair historian
By Philippe Geril
The Greek Wars is an excellent informative book, but and there is a big but, it is not a pleasant read through. It is heavy going, especially the first two chapters are interlaced with so many dates, places and names in such a variety and with such a multitude that you need to have an ancient who's who encyclopedia handy just to follow it all. The book would have improved quite a bit if for example maps were included or timelines for all the rulers named in this work.

The book does really delve into detail on all aspects of warfare related within the Greek-Persian time frame of conflict and politics (including some real gems) so it cannot be faulted on this point, but it is a book for scholars and not for the casual reader.

Therefore my 3 stars.

Double Feature: Attack of the Soul-Sucking Brain Zombies/Bride of the Soul-Sucking Brain Zombies (The Russel Middlebrook Series) (Volume 3)

Book 3 in the Russel Middlebrook Series, Winner of the Lambda Book Award!

It's a horror-movie extravaganza in this, the second sequel to Brent Hartinger's gay teen classic, Geography Club. Two complete books in one recount the stories of best friends Russel and Min who sign up to be extras on the set of a zombie film and learn that there's nothing scarier than high school romance.

In the first book, Attack of the Soul-Sucking Brain Zombies, Russel must choose between his long-distance boyfriend and a close-to-home ex named Kevin who wants to get back together. In the second book, Bride of the Soul-Sucking Brain Zombies, Min struggles to accept her cheerleader girlfriend's decision to stay in the closet.

But beware! Russel and Min's separate stories affect each other in surprising ways, and you'll have to read both books together to find out the whole story.

From School Library Journal
Grade 9 Up—In this sequel to Geography Club (2003) and Order of the Poison Oak (2005, both HarperCollins), told in flip-book format, Russel and Min answer a casting call for extras for an upcoming horror film. Russel's parents have just discovered that he is gay, and he is devastated by their reaction. Also, an old boyfriend who dumped him turns up at rehearsals and wants to get back together; while the attraction is still there, Russel loves his current boyfriend. On the flip side, Min is lonely and wants a new relationship, but she can't decide if she's willing to have one with Leah, who has chosen not to come out for fear of losing her friends. All of this is played out against the backdrop of movie rehearsals. What is intriguing about the book is how very differently these two characters interpret the same events, and how oblivious each one can be to what is happening to the other. Hartinger handles a number of fairly serious issues here with a lighter touch than in The Order of the Poison Oak, and there is a lot of humor in this book. The characters' narrative voices sound authentically teen, and the section in which Russel tells about his coming out to his parents, their reaction, and his subsequent talk with the family priest particularly rings true. Min Wei's story is equally well told. Libraries owning the first two books will definitely want this one.—Kathleen E. Gruver, Burlington County Library, Westampton, NJ

Review
"I really think this guy could be the next Judy Blume." - Pop Candy

"Hartinger has a knack for teen dialogue, and his characters spring to life -- even in costume as the undead. At the heart of Zombies is the teen friends' respect and caring for each other, which, these days, is downright refreshing." - USA Today

"Both stories stand alone, yet each compliments the other. The action is fast and funny." - Kirkus Reviews

"A clever idea ... Hartinger handles his characters with the right amount of angst and humor, making this a valuable read." - VOYA

Soul-Sucking Zombie's
By A. Socrates
You have to read both of their stories to really understand what's going on. I enjoyed both Russell and Min's side of what went on during this little fiasco. Hartinger did a great job explaining every little detail, especially when it came to Middlebrook finally coming out. I really hope in the next book we get to learn more about how everything went with him and the folks. Oh, and especially about KEVIN. :) Poor guy. Gotta love him for what he did.

Split Screen shows teens aren't zombies
By 24mark
Brent Hartinger writes great teen novels: they have strong plots with unforeseeable twists; they're filled with clever dialogue and funny one-liners; and most important, they're stocked with good-hearted (though occasionally wrong-headed) characters who remind readers of what they love about their own friends--their brilliance and loyalty, their passion for their beliefs, and their ability to remember one's good points and still catch one's failings.

Hartinger delivers on all these strengths once again in his new novel "Split Screen." It's the third in a series, but it's a sequel with an innovative spin: it tells the same story twice from two points of view, demonstrating that even best friends experience things differently, and that life's big questions--like who to love, and when to be brave--don't always have just one right answer.

The book follows "The Geography Club" and "The Order of the Poison Oak" to tell the stories of high school student Russell Middleton and his circle of cool but less-than-popular friends. In previous books, Russell and his pals formed a gay-straight alliance to make their school a safer, more open place and then managed to survive summer camp with nothing worse than bruised hearts and itchy rashes. "Split Screen" catches up with them in the fall of their junior year as they sign up to work as extras on the set of a horror movie filming right in their hometown.

When read one way, the book tells Russell's story of boyfriend and parent troubles: just as he's anticipating a Thanksgiving visit from his steady guy, his unsteady ex begins trying to win him back, sending Russ into an emotional spin. And to top it off, Russell's parents come unhinged from reason when they (belatedly) find out that he's gay. It's a mess.

But flip the book over, and the same events are told in a different version by Russell's good friend Min, a brainier-than-thou girl who tries to live her life according to staunch principles. She aspires not just to honesty but to forthrightness, and that sort of candor is causing her problems. Min's new girlfriend (who's completely awesome and totally sharp) is set on being two different people: one version for Min and another entirely for her friends at school. It's also a mess.

Hartinger excels at giving Russell and Min distinct voices and at making their similar struggles unique: Russ is pulled more by his heart whereas Min follows her head--he worries most about being misunderstood or hurting someone; she's terrified at her uncertainty when her clear ideals jam up against life's murkier situations.

This novel's greatest strength (from among many) may be that Hartinger gives both his main characters truly perplexing dilemmas. One could see them choosing either way--the old boyfriend or the new, a path of compromise or one of confrontation--and sympathize with the reasons behind the decision. Rather than present his teen readers with simplistic answers, he instead suggests that the act of deciding is itself the main event: Life can't be lived on autopilot, and no one can choose better than the person in the cockpit.

"Split Screen" brings a great deal of fun, but it also digs deep into exactly the sort of questions that teens face as they go about the hard work of growing up. It's a romp with good friends, and it's a book that gives a lot of respect to the right and responsibility of young people to make important choices for themselves.

Recommended for readers ages 12 and older.

Enjoyable
By Edward Aycock
I enjoyed this book more than I did "The Order of the Poison Oak", and just slightly less than "The Geography Club" (books that also feature the characters in Split Screen.) The reason why I didn't enjoy it as much as "Geography Club" partly has to do with the original always being one's favorite, but that "Split Screen" wasn't long enough. Yes, we do get two full stories but I'd have been happier with one expanded tale focusing on Russel. I admit, I didn't find Min's story as interesting, but she's never been one of my favorite characters anyhow.

That aside, Hartinger's writing has grown stronger and leaner without sacrificing quality or character development. Plus, the unique aspect of a low-budget zombie film is a fun catalyst and the brief glimpses we get of the filmmaking experience are illuminating. I think most people will enjoy this book, and considering Russel's dilemma with his parents, I'm hoping we get another.

Nothing to Lose (Jack Reacher), by Lee Child

Two small towns in the middle of nowhere: Hope and Despair. Between them, nothing but twelve miles of empty road. Jack Reacher can’t find a ride, so he walks. All he wants is a cup of coffee. What he gets are four hostile locals, a vagrancy charge, and an order to move on. They’re picking on the wrong guy.

Reacher is a hard man. No job, no address, no baggage. Nothing at all, except hardheaded curiosity. What are the secrets that Despair seems so desperate to hide?

With just one ally—a mysterious woman cop from Hope—and many enemies, Reacher goes up against a whole town, hunting the rich man at its core, cracking open his terrifying agenda, asking the question: Who has the edge—a man with everything to gain, or a man with nothing to lose?

From Publishers Weekly
At the start of bestseller Child's solid 12th Jack Reacher novel (after Bad Luck and Trouble), the ex-military policeman hitchhikes into Colorado, where he finds himself crossing the metaphorical and physical line that divides the small towns of Hope and Despair. Despair lives up to its name; all Reacher wants is a cup of coffee, but what he gets is attacked by four thugs and thrown in jail on a vagrancy charge. After he's kicked out of town, Reacher reacts in his usual manner—he goes back and whips everybody's butt and busts up the town's police force. In the process, he discovers, with the help of a good-looking lady cop from Hope, that a nearby metal processing plant is part of a plan that involves the war in Iraq and an apocalyptic sect bent on ushering in the end-time. With his powerful sense of justice, dogged determination and the physical and mental skills to overcome what to most would be overwhelming odds, Jack Reacher makes an irresistible modern knight-errant. From Booklist
*Starred Review* Jake Reacher only rents rooms one night at a time, confirming his “absolute freedom to move on.” About the only thing sure to convince Reacher to stick around is someone telling him he has to leave. That’s what happens when the former military policeman turned inveterate loner stops for a cup of coffee in an aptly named company town called Despair, Colorado. Strangers aren’t allowed in Despair, he’s told, and two cops arrive to drive him out to the city limits. You can run Reacher out of town, maybe, but you sure as hell can’t keep him out. Forming an unlikely alliance with a female cop in the neighboring town that’s called—you guessed it—Hope, Reacher sneaks back to Despair and finds all manner of strange goings-on: the creepy burg is run by a megalomaniac entrepreneur who is using his metal-salvage business for something definitely snarky. But what? Reacher finds the answers, of course, but to do so, he pretty much has to go up against the whole damn town. What is it that makes these action-fantasies so satisfying? Yes, there is something of the cartoon superhero in Reacher’s steel-trap mind and body, but the action is so grounded in everyday details that instead of laughing it all off as silly, we find ourselves responding on a deeply emotional, archetypal level. We all feel as if the whole town is against us sometimes; Reacher lets us experience what it would be like, just once, to slap every last one of the fools aligned against us upside the head and then, pausing only to pack our toothbrush, hit the highway. --Bill Ott

Review
“As I was reading this latest book, I was trying to understand why I like the Reacher series so much….The Jack Reacher books are all revenge fantasies. By the time the reader encounters the first fight, the reader is already mad…. Reacher doesn't go looking for trouble, but trouble usually finds him.”—San Francisco Chronicle

“Explosive and nearly impossible to put down.”—People

“Do yourself a favor and get hooked on this series.” —Cleveland Plain Dealer

“Colossal. Earthshaking. Stupendous…Jack Reacher is one of the most enduring action heroes on the American landscape.” —Janet Maslin, New York Times“

Rare miss for Child
By JOHN ONEIL
Disappointing. After reeling off 11 good to (often) great Reacher novels, Lee Child struck out with this one. It starts promising enough. Despair had all the makings of a great stage for Reacher to be Reacher, reminiscent of the Killing Floor. But the promise is never fulfilled. The meandering plot doesn't pull you in. Unlike previous stories, the villain is flat, two dimensional and far from frightening - a death sentence for any story of good vs. evil. The action is sparse.

Previous Reacher novels were impossible to put down. You were torn between your desire to get to the end and your hope that the story would keep going. After all, it would be another year before you got the next one. Sadly, that was not true here. The ending seemed slapped on, left lots of loose ends untied and seemed very uncharacteristic for Reacher. But worst of all, it didn't come too soon. It could have come 100 pages sooner.

These were the big problems with the book. Reacher's detour into politics and criticism of the war did seem out of character but not because I had any assumptions about his politics. He always struck me as outside of politics - outside of almost everything for that matter.

Lee, everyone is entitled to a miss, especially after the roll you have been on. Here is hoping the next one is back to your old form

Shockingly pedestrian
By BeachReader
After reading about 8 of Child's Jack Reacher books, I finally found a dud. It started out thrilling, as expected, but quickly become almost boring. I can not believe I am typing those words.

Reacher's repeatedly doing the same thing, over and over (returning to a bad place) was tedious and so unlike our hero's usual behavior. The plot wandered all over the place and the book was too long.

I found it impossible to buy into the far-fetched "conspiracy theory" with its pathetic "villains" and was surprised at Child's foray into political opinion (putting his opinions into Reacher's mouth -which completely changed Reacher's character). This was totally out of place, I thought, and awkward at best.

I just hope that Child has not run out of stories and that he will return Reacher to his previous inventive adventures.

I only read the Amazon reviews after finishing the book, and must say I am not surprised that there are 110 reviews and the average is an abyssmal 2.5 stars. Most of his other books have averaged 4 stars.

"Nothing to Lose" except time wasted reading this one.
By PrakThomas
Lee Child/Jack Reacher novels are "Gotta get the hardback today" books for me. His previous efforts range from very good to great. His plots/locales have varied, but his formula for a page-turning thriller has not. "Nothing to Lose" not only lacked the usual page-turner formula, but was actually a chore to finish. This novel has to be compared to Child's previous efforts to appreciate it's failings.
"The Hook"- Child can set the hook like no other author. The action starts hard and heavy, and is mysterious enough to keep the reader engaged. "Nothing to Lose" had no hook. By page 45, I was still waiting for the hook to get me interested. Never happened.
"The Bad Guys"- Child always has fascinating and diabolical bad guys, often with a clever plot twist to throw reader off of who's good-who's bad. But by the end of the novels, I can't wait for Jack to take care of these guys as he always does. The End Times preacher was a [yawn] low-grade baddie who [yawn] only truly gets defined as a baddie after he's been blown up [yawn].
"The Roller Coaster"- Every Reacher book to date has hit a point where I cannot put it down until it is finished. I call this the "top of the roller coaster"- usually about 100 pages from the end. 3 AM, have to be up at 7AM- too bad. Have to finish the Reacher book. In Nothing to Lose, 75 pages from the end, I just lost interest, and put it down for three days. I forced myself to finish it.
"Politics"- If Lee Child is actually interested in continued sales of his novels, he might be wise to realize several points. Jack Reacher probably doesn't have mass appeal for left-wingers, peaceniks, or academic liberals. Also, the Jack Reacher character is almost by definition apolitical. "Nothing to Lose" is basically a platform for Child to espouse his anti-Iraq War, anti-administration views and twist them into a discoherent plot.
"Memorability"- Within one hour of finishing most Reacher novels, I could recite a fairly tight outline of the main story lines. It's now an hour since I finished Nothing to Lose, and realize I can't do it. Let me try. Jack wanders back and forth from Despair to Hope. Beats up some guys who weren't really bad, but pissed him off. Goes back and forth a few more times and occasionally beats up some more guys. Finds out the town is weird with something going on. Gov't/current administration coverup of gross failures in Iraq exposed. Pitiful brain injured Iraq vet demonstrated for all to see. Pipeline for military deserters desperate to escape duty in Iraq and head to Canada left unexposed. Gets the babe. Blows up the dirty bomb which really wasn't that dirty. The end. Hmmmm.
Technical Accuracy- OK. It's just a story. A few loose ends are inevitable and forgivable. Truth can be stretched for novels sake. Nothing to Lose took these liberties to the point of constant distraction. Acute radiation sickness from depleted uranium??? Come on. Massive Abrams battle tank losses covered up by the gov't??? Come on. His description of a chronic brain-injured patient was so off base it was distracting. (If Child would like an MD/surgeon to proof his next book, I volunteer).
In summary, No Hook, Bland Bad Guys, an 8 ft. roller coaster, politically polluted, unmemorable, and technically inaccurate. Worst Reacher book of all times. I think I'll wait for the paperback when "Gone Tomorrow" comes out.

Review
-- It does a good job of focusing on several topic areas that are important to manual therapists and other students of movement and function. The inclusion of various concepts of motion are not often found in massage therapy textbooks. Also it pairs a classical explanation of what muscles do with excellent explanations of surface anatomy, strength testing and discusses roles of the muscle beyond its action, such as its role in stabilization etc. All throughout, the text is supported by clear helpful photographs illustrated to show the movement more clearly. -- The tables are very good for detail oriented visual learners. Putting it into motion and Try This are great for the kinesthetic learner. -- The "Putting it into motion" section does a great job of addressing kinesthetic learners

ambition, without greed, pays off
By Kurt
I got my copy of BE MY GUEST at an old book sale at the public library. It's a wonderful book, and I'm glad to hear that even in the late 1990s it was still being distributed at Hilton hotels. This book chronicles the business endeavors of Conrad N. Hilton from his aspirations to own his own bank in the pre-WWI years through his first hotels in Texas and New Mexico in the early '20s to his crowning glory--the purchase of the opulent Waldorf-Astoria hotel in NYC around 1950. What makes this book interesting and useful is the quality of the man, not the strength of his business empire. "Connie" Hilton is a man of honor and principle, but he has much ambition, too. His fortunes have been made through hard work, calculated risks, and his "people skills." Comparing Conrad "Connie" Hilton to someone like Donald "The Donald" Trump shows how our culture has become more cheap and frivilous in the two generations that separate these hotel/real estate giants. For another book with similar factual content but less wit, humor, and commentary on human nature, see Thomas Ewing Dabney's book, THE MAN WHO BOUGHT THE WALDORF (New York: Duell, Sloan, and Pearce;1950.)

Should be standard reading for entrepreneurial success; a timeless classic
By Craig Rowland
I picked up Be My Guest by Conrad Hilton when I stayed at the Milwaukee Hilton several years ago. Guests of Hilton hotels in addition to finding the standard free soap and shampoo also receive a complimentary copy of Hilton's memoir, originally written in 1957. I started reading Be My Guest while aboard S. A. Agulhas II en route from Cape Town, South Africa to Tristan da Cunha. I finished the book on board and while I wanted to leave it in the ship's library when I had finished it, the lack of Internet on board, both on my way to Tristan as well as coming back, precluded me from posting this review from the ship. Thus I have waited until my return to Cape Town to post this.

Be My Guest was an engaging story that I enjoyed reading each night. It was a can't-put-down book, wherein Hilton documented his family story, often with humorous anecdotes, from the courtship of his parents and his boyhood growing up in New Mexico to his founding of one of the greatest hotel chains worldwide.

Each of Hilton's parents instilled in him a guiding principle that he has followed all of his life. From his mother, Mary Laufersweiler Hilton, he learned the power of prayer and from his father Gus he learned the value of work. In addition to these principles Hilton added his own: that one must never be afraid to dream. And to dream big . And big is exactly how Conrad Hilton dreamt.

Hilton got his first taste of the hotel industry when a currency panic in October 1907 left his father nearly broke. His family soon realized that they had been literally sitting on a moneymaker:

"We had the biggest, ramblingest adobe house in New Mexico directly facing a railroad station on a main line. And we had my mother's cooking. This added up to only one thing--a Hilton Hotel."

Be My Guest had plenty of humorous moments and I can imagine Hilton himself laughing out loud as he recalled some moments from his childhood. I'll bet he had a good time writing (or dictating) his story. Having such a devoutly Catholic mother kept a young Connie always on his toes:

"Almost as much as going to church or playing hooky, I liked going down the road to talk with Charles Hislie, the carpenter, or Carl Jenks, the village blacksmith and dentist. Mr. Jenks shoed horses or pulled teeth, whichever service was required at the moment. My brother Carl, after an extraction, claimed that he used the same instruments for both operations, but I have no first-hand knowledge of that.
"As I seldom had a toothache I loved to hang around Mr. Jenks' emporium and smell the pungent hot smell and listen to the hammer ringing on the anvil. I also liked to hear Mr. Jenks cuss. He was very talented in that direction and to this day I believe he had as extensive a vocabulary as any man I ever met.
"This hero worship was rudely interrupted when an unsuitable word escaped my lips at dinner table. Mother was shocked. Gus paused in carving the roast only long enough to glare at me and say, 'You stay away from the smithy.' From that time I did, except on dental business when I was accompanied by my lady mother."

Mrs. Hilton also features in an amusing story after her son had made his fortune in the hotel business. She could not accustom herself to having others do for her what she had proudly always done herself:

"My mother, I might add, never did modernize her views on tipping. When she lived for some years at the El Paso Hilton, this was a source of some amusement and much conniving on the part of her children. I, myself, would take her twenty or thirty quarters with specific instructions that she was to give one or two to any bellboy, any waiter, anyone, indeed, who gave her special service, depending on the extra amount of trouble it gave him.

"'I'll try, Connie,' she'd say.
"And I would find out from my sister Helen that, as soon as my back was turned, she'd trot down to the cashier and have the quarters converted into dimes, with which she reluctantly rewarded any service she absolutely could not do herself. Ten cents remained all her life the most she could bring herself to tip."

Be My Guest traces Hilton's shift from buying banks to buying hotels. At first he took over older hotels and transformed them according to his vision. The Hilton empire of new hotels was not his immediate intention. Only after his frustration in having to renovate yet another older building did he consider starting to build his next hotel from the ground up.

It was however not a new hotel but the palatial Queen of all hotels, the Waldorf Astoria, that was his prime target for many years. Its prestige as the height of luxurious hotel accommodation and reputation for unparallelled service made it the diamond in the eye of the Big Apple. He dreamt of owning it one day, and this big dream of his would one day become true. Hilton wrote of his many offers and counteroffers, and offered his insights into the skills of negotiation and the honour in keeping your word with a handshake.

The Waldorf Astoria may be the Queen of his "dowager" hotels, yet he still had to revitalize it to meet Hilton standards. However even when confronted with a rather unfortunate reality of hotel ownership, Hilton can still elicit a smile:

"A wire from Carl at the Waldorf pinpointed this vague feeling. 'Fellow in 202 bumped himself off last night. After looking at his room I don't blame him. We have got to fix up those rooms.'
"I somehow doubted that the dcor in 202 had driven the poor fellow to suicide. Unfortunately tired people, discouraged people have sought the impersonal solitude of a hotel for their unhappy business since time immemorial."

One of the pleasures of reading Be My Guest were its stories away from the wheeling and dealing and cornerstone laying. I was absorbed not only in the stories of Hilton's boyhood but also in the tales about his wives and children. Hilton's second marriage was to Zsa Zsa Gabor which in retrospect he could see "was doomed before it started". He recounted with heaving exasperation the countless times he tried to curb her spending habits:

"Glamour, I found, is expensive, and Zsa Zsa was glamour raised to the last degree. She also knew more days on which gifts could be given than appear on any holiday calendar. And then, of course, you could always give gifts because it was no special day at all and thereby transform it."

and:

"I have tried to instill sound business principles into my beautiful Circe, but I might as well have practiced on a statue in the park."

Be My Guest , being that it was published in 1957 at the end of the communist red scare of McCarthyism, ends its final chapters with Hilton vowing to fight communism. The anti-communist tone seems like a time warp of a read for today's reader, yet at the time the red menace was seen as a legitimate threat and proud Americans showed their patriotism by publicly fighting against it. To Hilton, his hotels bridged cultures by bringing the peoples of the world together as a united front against communism.

Hilton ends his book by listing his ten ingredients for successful living. His words of wisdom may help others realize their dreams. Herewith are the Hilton top ten:

Find your own particular talent.
Be big.
Be honest.
Live with enthusiasm.
Don't let your possessions possess you.
Don't worry about your problems.
Don't cling to the past.
Look up to people when you can--down to no one.
Assume your full share of responsibility for the world in which you live.
Play consistently and confidently.

Old 'classic' book, a very nice read..
By Mista R O'Regan
Hi guys,
I read this book because Dan Kennedy mentioned it in one of his marketing books..

It is a rags to riches story about Conrad Hilton, the guy who started Hilton hotels as we know it.
(This is before the days of Paris Hilton, Conrad was not born into money & fame!)

I was expecting to learn about entrepreneurial skills.. which I did a little, but I got more out of this book than I was expecting.. I got a cultural history lesson and an ethics lesson !

It was written in 1957 and covered Conrad's life in older times still, he talks about his parents, before the 1st world war.. What was lovely, was I got an insight into the old days, how people lived.. before technology as we know it today.. and before some cities were even built..

I never realised that hotels in the past didn't have room service, or getting a pickup from the station by taxi, 100 years ago, was unheard of.. stuff we take for granted now, but at one point didn't exist..

I feel I gained a renewed sense of ethics that may well help me in my own ventures in the future.. I'm not a Christian, and Connie does go on about the Christian 'God' alot.. occasionally too much, but never enough to really bother me, I understood where he was coming from, and was interesting to see how his faith helped him..

The first chapter, I found hard and boring to read, fortunately shortly after, I started getting into this book, and am really glad I read it.

There are as you can expect, a number of little pears of wisdom scattered throughout this book, and Im sure each reader will find their own nuggets.
It's not a big book.. 280+ pages, and a very nice little read.. Worth it in my opinion.
Have fun
