Guidelines for a beginner

From the perspective of someone who knew absolutely nothing about "Reiki," this book adequately serves as a means to get acquainted with the main particularities of this technique. As the author makes it clear, the correct and adequate application of the Reiki techniques should be done under the orientation of a Master, therefore implying that the reader should not rely exclusively on what is explained in the book (besides the fact that the necessary symbols have not been given). The structure of the book however, serves well as a teaching manual for those who are already familiar with Reiki and its applications.

Reiki, The Healing Touch, First and Second Degree Manual

This is a great Reiki book that explains the spiritual side of Reiki as well as the important everyday information needed to really practice it. It is clear from his writing that William is on an independent spiritual path that honors all religions and spiritual paths. He says that Reiki comes from God, but it is clear that he means this in a universal sense. I really enjoy his honest approach and the way he shares the most important information including the best info on the symbols I have found. The illustrations of the hand positions, his explaination of what Reiki is and how it heals and his encouragement to develop your Reiki skills is wonderful. I use this Reiki manual in all my classes and recommend it to everyone.

Lots of Great Photos...But Lacking Real Info

I was browsing through the pages and the photos were pretty amazing. Included were diagrams showing how the lighting was set up.

but one big problem....about 99% of the descriptions were lacking technical information such as the shutter speed, aperture and ISO. I have other photography lighting books and they usually mention what these technical data were used to get the shot. I know each situation would dictate different data but what we want to know is what it took to get THAT shot. Necessary info like "Was High Speed Sync used to darken the skies?", "Was that particular aperture used to allow a lower ISO?" or "Was high ISO used to bring in more ambient lighting?"

I guess i got this one when it was a gold box deal but still...money is money.

Maybe I can resell this book to someone else.

Lots of pictures, no information on how to even take them

While Zeke Kamm features a particular photo with a diagram to along with it... that's all you get. There are no camera settings, i.e. Speed/Aperture/Iso/lens type/distance to describe how the picture was taken. It's the equivalent of buying a cookbook with lots of pretty pictures of dishes and containing a list of ingredients- but no instructions on how to mix them or even the ingredient quantity.

Nearly all photos are the standard "key light flash at 45 degrees with a fill light on the other side and another flash behind the subject" setup. The photos all look like they were enhanced in Photoshop as a good bit of photos I looked at are not in camera shots.

Without any specifics, all you are getting is a picture book with some hints... with the rest for you to figure out. You'll learn a lot more by going to Flickr and searching for "Strobist", which will give you the same pictures AND camera settings.

This author's writing style is self-serving and lacks depth. From the standpoint of someone that has read all of his books, my best suggestion is to stay away from his works.

Kelby does a much better job and offers more tips in one chapter than the Strobist offers in an entire book.

All fluff. No real helpful content.

Nothing you can't find online for free

Don't like that it covers 2 books in one, because the activities don't necessarily cover both books, and both books don't apply to all of the kids I work with. All of the activities are already things that are available for free in online searches.

Get it before it is gone!

This book is a technology/classroom teachers dream. It has great stories that incorporate real life digital citizenship lessons. Julia is a mastermind of technique and application. I met Julia this summer at Reading Conference. She knows first hand what kids need to know and how to approach these topics. Buy this book. You will not regret it! Better yet, find where she is speaking and see her in person!

Good read but not an ARCADE history and not valid to the UK

I sent off for this book cause I was interested in the history of Video games found in the arcade from the mid 70's. I live in the UK, and you cannot get this book from (...), so I sent off to the US of A, and it turned up right on time. Now this is a very good book, packed full of details, and covering the complete history of the industry, BUT NOT THE ARCADE HISTORY, BUT THE HOME CONSOLE HISTORY. Saying that, I would have bought this book anyway.

This book is one of the best sources for the history of video games. Anyone that grew up playing video games in the late 70's and early 80's will appreciate the good memories that this book will bring back. I especially enjoyed the book because it took me back to my childhood and to a time when video games were new and exciting and it may do the same for you.

This book covers everything from the begining of video games through the Playstation one. It is a great book for learning the history of video games. Plenty of pictures will remind you of past systems and systems you have never seen before. An exelent book for any video game collector or anyone in the industry.

This was the biggest waste of $50 ever!!! For being a "parts book" it didn't even have all of the parts, most of it was about tires. It wasn't even a "book"....it was a handful of photo copies spiral-bound together.

Great Introduction to SNA

This book covers all the basic approaches to network analysis. While the Wasserman & Faust text covers the mathematical approaches in depth, Analyzing Social Networks is a more concise work for those who are ready to start playing around with SNA software.

I was surprised, though, that there wasn't much in-depth explanation of UCINET, the authors' own network analysis package. I have been trying to get beyond the basics of using UCINET on my own, and it has been difficult. I am not a programmer, so the help files for the software leave a lot to be desired for someone like me. But I think this book, coupled with "Disrupting Dark Networks" (which provides examples using UCINET, Pajek, and ORA), make a great pair of resources for those trying to learn SNA on their own.

Edit (7/14/2013)-- The authors kindly pointed out to me that while not in the book, there is a document on the website that explain how to use UCINET.

Interesting, informative but not for the Beginner

A book which takes the reader on a tour of key concepts in social network analysis with reference to examples from the empirical literature. The book assumes familiarity with research terminology and is best suited to established researchers rather than to the aspirant social network analyst. The book does not provide a complete tutorial in the use of UCINET as a tutorial is available online.
