Well done firsthand report of children's experience of the Civil Rights struggle

Maybe not THE best book on the Civil Rights movement I've ever read, but it's very good. The pieces written by the two women, of their memories of their involvement in the Civil Rights struggle in Selma, are very well done. They really convey what the children experienced.

A moving as-told-to account of the experiences of 2 brave little girls in the days of the Selma civil rights movement. As adult women, they recall their involvement as children in the stirring church meetings and the marches, their relationship with Martin Luther King Jr., and themurders of 2 white Northern clergyman. Stirring, inspirational, deeply moving.

I have read this book over a decade ago, and saw the movie on Tv, and I enjoyed both very well. These children were fearless in the face of danger, and to me,that is awesome.

About the Author
Anthony Palmiotti is a Professor of Navigation at the SUNY Maritime College and holds a merchant marine officer s license as Master, 3000 GT, and Chief Mate, unlimited, Oceans. Mr. Palmiotti has sailed on vessels ranging in size from coastal tugs to large oceangoing vessels and has brought this experience to the classroom in many years of teaching both ashore on the college campus and at sea aboard the college training ship. He has been published in maritime journals both domestic and international. He lives in New York State with his wife, a husky named Halo, and a garage full of self-built wooden canoes.

Excellent overview of terrestial and celestial navigation

This is an excellent overview, reminder and summary of all marine navigation topics. This manual would be great for those who haven't shipped out in years and need a refresher, or students who need extra help remembering terrestrial and celestial navigation calculations or anyone who wants to know what navigating is all about.

Starring Miss Barbara Stanwyck by Ella Smith

The book "Starring Miss Barbara Stanwyck" by Ella Smith was an outstanding biography of the great Barbara Stanwyck's career. It was a comprehensive study of the great actress Barbara Stanwyck and includes many photos from Barbara's very beginning in movies and until the end of her career in television. I admired Barbara Stanwyck very much prior to reading this book but adore her even more now. It was no coincidence that Barbara was loved so much by some of the greatest producers, directors, actors, and crews who ever lived. The book is a testament to both the professionalism and talents of Miss Stanwyck and to the class she exhibted on her many sets with everyone she was in contact with. It is apparent that the author of this book also admired this movie and televison star a great deal and wanted the world to know the reason why. Finally, I think that the ultimate compliment to the author Ella Smith of this fine book is from Barbara Stanwyck herself who states that "you made me live on pages and, lady, you did one hell of a job". This book is a must for all Barbara Stanwyck fans.

THE BEST CAREER BOOK EVER WRITTEN

Ella Smith's coffee-table book on the career of Barbara Stanwyck is, bar none, the finest of its kind that this writer has ever read. Instead of being content to merely list Stanwyck's films and reprint old reviews (in the tradition of most "Films of" books), Ella Smith has gone the extra mile, and then some. This is because the idea originated with Smith (as opposed to a writer being "assigned" the project by a publisher), and it's entirely her baby. Smith designed the layout, selected the photographs and determined which of them would get the full page treatment (and her choices are absolutely breathtaking!)
In addition to including original reviews of Stanwyck's stage, film, and television work (as well as highlights from Stanwyck's interviews from that period) Smith personally viewed all of Stanwyck's work, and her observations are marvelously perceptive (drawing as they do on her own experience as actress, director and teacher). I was particularly pleased that she notes the powerful impact of Stanwyck's SILENT moments (whereas too many critics remember only the explosive ones). But most of all, I value the interviews Smith conducted with Stanwyck's co-stars and directors. These anecdotes are, in turn, touching and funny --- and reveal aspects of Stanwyck's personality that add greatly to the readers' regard for the woman, as well as the actress.
Of all the books written about Barbara Stanwyck, THIS is the only one worthy of her.

American men from Macon County, Alabama, for a study of "the effects of untreated syphilis in the Negro male." For the next 40 years—even after the development of penicillin, the cure for syphilis—these men were denied medical care for this potentially fatal disease. The Tuskegee Syphilis Study was exposed in 1972, and in 1975 the government settled a lawsuit but stopped short of admitting wrongdoing. In 1997, President Bill Clinton welcomed five of the Study survivors to the White House and, on behalf of the nation, officially apologized for an experiment he described as wrongful and racist. In this book, the attorney for the men describes the background of the Study, the investigation and the lawsuit, the events leading up to the Presidential apology, and the ongoing efforts to see that out of this painful and tragic episode of American history comes lasting good.

40 Years of Medical Injustice

I'd only heard of this grave injustice sometime when the movie Miss Evers' Boys was released. I never saw the movie and never really considered reading about the issue. To me it was just one more iniquity in a long line of iniquities perpetrated by the U.S. upon African Americans. It was only recently that it was brought up in a book I was reading that I decided to read about the matter.

As far as credibility, The Tuskegee Syphilis Study is probably the most credible book on the topic as it was written by the lawyer representing the participants. Fred Gray had the fortune (or misfortune) of pouring over thousands of documents spanning 40 years in order to assemble a case against the United States of America. In doing so he became intimately familiar with the egregious wrong that was done to the African American men that were tricked into participating in this study.

The book is very concise at 120 pages and covers all of the pertinent information. For me, it cleared up some misconceptions I had such as the participants being given syphilis and the factual accuracy of the movie Miss Evers' Boys.

Being that the author was so central to the case we get much biographical information about him as well. At times I wasn't sure if it was to establish his credibility or brag about his achievements. It didn't detract from the crux of the book but it was noticeable. Still it was a good and necessary book for America's post Civil War history.

Gray has a very concise manner of thinking and that shows through in this book. He tells the story in a manner that's very respectful to the victims of the "Study"
