One of the most interesting books by T. Lobsang Rampa I have read. Without some of my own experiences I would find the book almost unbelievable. He mentions many thought provoking experiences-experienced by himself-that fosters deep thinking far removed from our present awareness in the third dimension. The myraid of experiences-both pleasant and unpleasant-endured by this one man are incredible. A very interesting book.

Alot of repetition and its an old old book taken from some long forgotten warehouse and charging a high price !

Rampa

Probably the most revealing book of them all. I think this might have been his last book about the Lama life. It takes place in a hidden cavern high in the Himalyas with his old guide Mingyar Dundop who explains to Rampa(as a young lama) about the aliens who left this cavern eons ago. it also tells about "walk ins". If you love Rampa you must read this book!!

Fernando “Bong” Abenir is a Filipino martial arts instructor based in Manila, Philippines. In 2001 he began merging eskrima, silat, yaw-yan and kuntao systems through personal experience in live weapon sparring, personal street defense altercations, and trial-and-error to develop Abenir Kalis Filipino Fighting Art. He has written for Rapid Journal, is currently a regular contributor to the Manila Times, and appears on numerous TV sports and morning shows in the Philippines.

the empty hand tactics and techniques for facing an altercation is good. Solid movement

So I received this book today. My anticipation for this book would be that it would reveal or even state clear and consice aspects of the filipino martial arts (FMA) on how it can be extrapolaited for close quarter combatives/self-defense application. Unfortunately I was very dissappointed to see that the application for the FMA in a street confrontation was lacking to say the least. I speak from the view point of being a FMA practitioner myself which just under 5 years of participating in the art, but I also speak as an individual from almost a decade of being a law enforcement officer as well. So with that said, I have somewhat of an insight when people engage in the taking of life. (notice how I didn't say "fighting" because that implies some type of equality) When someone who wants to FINISH you (i.e. kill you), then the situation is much different.
So on to the book, the empty hand tactics and techniques for facing an altercation is good. Solid movement, easy to follow, and from what I can see of the pictures it gives a clear idea of what needs to be done to end an altercation quickly. As far as the empty hand versus knife.....geez....this is hard to say only because the photos and book description as what you would do are somewhat unrealistic. It shows that you should grab the wrist or try to disarm the knife or blade with the hand (which in reality would be difficult and possibly deadly to you if you screw it up!) Mind you, you are in the adrenal state and all those fine motor skills go out the window so ya, not very realistic on the hand versus knife.
Same thing with the empty versus bolo (machette), again not very realistic. The knife versus knife, again if you want to duel and such, then fine. But if you actually find yourself in a situation where you are blade versus blade, then again, this book fails to give an accurate picture of what may happen. Again, your not tryng to 'fight' but finish your opponent.
If this book was a DVD instead then maybe I would have been able to see what the author was trying to state in his movements and ideas. Unfortunately that wasn't the case and the book kind of fails in showing an accurate picture of that.
As far as what I feel would be a good alternative to empty hand compatives that still have the expressionism of the FMA in them, check out the following: Kelly McCann--Combatives for Street Survival DVD, Jim Grovers: A hardcore guide to Offense based Defensive tactics DVD, Jim Wagner's Reality Based Personal Protection Series DVD, and Kali Tudo DVD (Dog Brothers Martial Arts)
These are the people who have faced combatives in life and on the job, along with alot of what they show is very similar if not almost identical to some of the FMA based empty striking and such. These people have either tested or shown how the FMA can be applied for self defense and combat application. Sure, it may not look pretty or apparent to be the FMA, but if you look closing and extract the essense of the material presented, you will definitely see it!

great reading and technology on the filipino combat arts

As a filipino martial artist training in Giron Arnis, Lameco Eskrima, and Pekiti Tersia Kali, i find this book simple to read and understand the technology. The techniques are not made to be flashy like one would assume is on tv. The tech is real and is what is needed to save you in a real life situation. I starting working in corrections in 2002 and have been a martial artist since 1996. I enjoyed this book, its one of the best books ive read on FMA i would really like to see another book maybe even a dvd in the future.

Eskrima Street Defense by Master Fernando Bong Abenir was an outstanding read.

With the passing of many of the grand masters, perpetuating the art and especially the fighting spirit of the Filipino martial arts are becoming increasingly important. Master Bong does an outstanding job of capturing and presenting his vast knowledge gained over decades of training with some of the greatest masters in the Philippines in a simple and easy to understand way. He more importantly provides a glimpse into the kind of mindset needed to fight through and prevail in life and death situations in environments that are less than optimal.

I would highly recommend this book for both experienced and novice FMA practitioners.

Dan Dick is an ordained minister of The United Methodist Church serving as the Director of Connectional Ministries for the Wisconsin Annual Conference. He is a nationally known speaker andteacher, and he is the author of thirteen books.

Barbara Dick, formerly an editor for Abingdon Press, is now working freelance from Wisconsin. Her editing projects include Newscope, The Wesley Study Bible, The Abingdon Worship Annual, The Abingdon Preaching Annual, Black Church Studies, The United Methodist Music and Worship Planner, and Prepare!, all from Abingdon Press, and Joy to the World from the Women s Division of The United Methodist Church. An Excellent Tool to Start Building

I purchased this book more than two years ago and basically set it aside. A year ago I picked it up again and asked my pastoral supervisor to lead the workshop that is laid out within the book. It was a powerful experience for six members of our small congregation plus myself. Those of us who participated the first time around will be leaders for repeats of the workshop and a multi-week class covering the same material.
There is more depth in this study than most if not all of the other studies of Spiritual Gifts, further developing the themes shaped in Willow Creek's "Network" and Church of the Resurrection's "Serving from the Heart", both of which I have also used. This depth lies in the related areas of Spirituality Types and Leadership/Interaction styles.
As mentioned above, the book includes a retreat/workshop plan and further resources are available at a website listed on the back cover of the book.

The writing is a bit dry, but this book is packed with useful content. It presents a thorough process for discerning spiritual gifts, leadership/interaction styles, and task type preferences and seeing how all three combine to produce a unique personal profile. The book also offers tools to discern how people with a variety of gifts and styles can work together in teams within the church.

This is a combination of architectural principles and design best practices, formalized in a workshop called Master Class for Microsoft Dynamics NAV Application Architecture and Design Patterns. The methodology helps in creating solutions that are easy to upgrade, recognizable for users, and maintainable outside the ecosystem of their creators. All three elements apply to the original Navision product that was shipped in 1995, and was extracted, updated, and documented in this methodology. In September 2015, Packt Publishing published his new book, Learning Dynamics NAV Patterns, which is about this methodology. He also organizes hands-on workshops together with a group of MVPs and MCTs from across the globe. Mark started in 1997 as an end user, and worked for 8 years for the NAV partners after this. Designing and maintaining add-on systems was his specialization. Some of these add-on systems exceed the standard product, when it comes to size and complexity. Coaching colleagues and troubleshooting complex problems is his passion and part of his day-to-day work. His first book, Dynamics NAV 2009 Application Design, was published in 2010 by Packt Publishing, and updated to Dynamics NAV 2013 Application Design, published by Packt Publishing, when a new release became available. Many end users of Microsoft Dynamics NAV struggle with the question of how to upgrade their two-tier solution to a three-tier solution. Mark can help you answer these questions and plot a roadmap to the future, retaining the investment in the solution. When Microsoft introduced the three-tier architecture in 2009, it meant a major shift for experienced NAV developers and consultants. Mark has trained most of those that live in the Netherlands and Belgium. In 2010, he started a think tank called Partner Ready Software together with four other Dynamics NAV experts. Partner Ready Software brings fresh ideas about designing applications in NAV, and creates awareness of applying Design Patterns in creating repeatable solutions. Mark is an associate in the Liberty Grove Software network, a member of the NAVUG advisory board, the co-founder of the Dutch Dynamics Community, the vice-president of the Association of Dynamics Professionals, and an advisor to Dynamics HUB. Mark has undertaken a special project and performance tuning of the Dynamics NAV product on SQL Server. I have read a lot of NAV books of which I thought: this is a book every C/AL developer (and preferably everyone somehow involved in NAV development) should read.

I've also had some NAV books on which I preferred I never had my hands (or eyes) laid on it.

Is this a book in either of these categories?

No, it isn't!

It is a book that every C/AL developer (and preferably everyone somehow involved in NAV development) MUST read! …. Twice! … At least!

This is really the holy bible of C/AL development!

The book explains how you should develop to make it more readable, maintainable, upgradeable.

I am not going into details, because you should not read ABOUT it, but read it!

The essentials of what makes NAV great

Much of what is in this book is stuff that every NAV professional should already know. Mark took the better part of the past 2-3 years to actually think about capturing the essence of the patterns that we find in NAV. By breaking down the building blocks of the application, you get a great sense of how it all works, and how to use that knowledge to extend the application.

This book is on my short list of must reads for consultants, business analysts, designers, and developers; anyone who works in this field really. If you deal with NAV in any way, this book will help you understand.

This book is an excellent resource for all IT staff involved in a NAV project. Mark Brummel is an advocate for standards and convention, and he describes his ideas very effectively and simply. In addition, this book highlights changes from previous versions of NAV, so this book is an invaluable resource on a project moving from an older version of NAV to a newer version.
