A Brief History of Old Testament Criticism: From Benedict Spinoza to Brevard Childs, by Mark S. Gignilliat

Modern Old Testament interpretation arose in an intellectual environment marked by interest in specific historical contexts of the Bible, attention to its literary matters, and, most significantly, the suspension of belief. A vast array of scholars contributed to the large, developing complex of ideas and trends that now serves as the foundation of contemporary discussions on interpretation. In A Brief History of Old Testament Criticism, Mark Gignilliat brings representative figures—such as Baruch Spinoza, W.M.L. de Wette, Julius Wellhausen, Hermann Gunkel, and others—and their theories together to serve as windows into the critical trends of Old Testament interpretation in the modern period. This concise overview is ideal for classroom use. It lays a foundation and provides a working knowledge of the major critical interpreters of the Old Testament, their approaches to the Bible, and the philosophical background of their positions. Each chapter concludes with a section For Further Reading, directing students to additional resources on specific theologians and theories.

Immensely interesting summary of the modern view of the Bible
By Derek Leman
Disclaimer: I received a complimentary review copy from the publisher.

The question underlying the biographical and explanatory chapters of this book is simple: is academic study of the Bible at odds with faith in its message? Gignilliat alludes several times to another excellent volume, Michael Legaspi's The Death of Scripture and the Rise of Biblical Studies. Legaspi concludes that reading the Bible as scripture will always be contradicted by studying it academically, because the two forms of reading have such different strategies. But Gignilliat wonders if we must consign ourselves to that conclusion.

I did not anticipate how much I would enjoy reading A Brief History of Old Testament Criticism (which I will call BHOTC). It's surely not a book that all readers will resonate with, but I would suggest especially if you have taken religion classes on a college level, this book could be for you. If names like Wellhausen, Gunkel, Albright, and Childs came up in your reading, or issues such as the J,E,D,P theory (the Documentary Hypothesis of the Pentateuch), this book may put the puzzle together for you.

I not only read the book, but limited myself to one chapter per day just to spread out the joy and benefit of reading it. I highlighted and color coded points for later reference and decided BHOTC will be a ready reference at times when the history of academic study of the Hebrew Bible is an issue for me. I found the entire reading to be a spiritual journey for several reasons. First, like the author and like his clear favorite of all the scholars summarized (Brevard Childs), I read the Bible confessionally (as scripture, I believe somehow in all of it God is speaking to Jews and Christians today). Second, also like Gignilliat and Childs, I read the Bible critically. I take time to notice details, which often lead to discovering discrepancies and problems that make a simplistic reading of the Bible impossible. Third, by raising throughout the different issues that have surfaced and different theories through modern times, BHOTC helped me think about possible approaches along the way.

Not everyone will be a close reader of the Bible. Many will prefer drawing surface comforts from cherry-picked scriptures and pretending this is adequate. That certainly has been the popular religious approach I have witnessed. Yet, as a favorite "faith and science" blogger (RJS, as she calls herself, on Scot McKnight's popular "Jesus Creed" blog) said recently: our faith is not fragile to investigation.

I believe academic study of the Bible can work with scriptural belief in the Bible. I believe the paradox between the two, which Legaspi documented so well, can be bridged.

BHOTC, begins with perhaps the greatest skeptic (Spinoza) and ends with perhaps the greatest believer (Childs) in the spectrum of paradigm-changing critics of the Hebrew Bible. I will briefly summarize the personalities and approaches as Gignilliat develops them in each chapter.

Benedict Spinoza (1632-1677) was banned by his own Jewish community and regarded as a heretic in his day. He was an original philosopher who learned from Descartes and went off on his own directions. Regarding the Bible, Spinoza was determined to read it in light of natural reason without presuming infallibility or that there was a true heavenly source to its words. He observed that the Torah says Moses heard God's words and told the people what God (allegedly) said. The gift of prophecy, said Spinoza, was imagination. The Bible can be read as a piece of literature, a set of ideas, but not as the living voice of God in any sense. Spinoza was very daring and ground-breaking in saying such things publicly.

W.M.L. DeWette (1780-1849) is little known today outside specialist circles, but Gignilliat says of him "DeWette's influence on nineteenth-century biblical studies can hardly be overestimated." Wellhausen (see next paragraph) said that everything he wrote about was to found already in DeWette. DeWette accepted rationally that the Bible's history was unfactual. Yet he was a Romantic in philosophy and sought a way to value the text outside of scientific and historical approaches. It is the worldview of the ancient authors which should be valued. They may have got their history wrong, but their ideas soared with greatness. Israel's religious history is a set of great ideas of antiquity, not to be taken as infallible, but as building blocks along the way as humans understand God and the world. As the ideas of the Greeks and Romans inspire modern thought, so should the ideas of the Hebrews.

Julius Wellhausen (1844-1918) is a name well-known to any who have taken a college level religion class dealing with the Bible. He did not invent the J,E,D,P theory (Documentary Hypothesis), but is its best-known early expositor. Gignilliat says in particular what Wellhausen did that was new was to write a history of Israel based on his ideas of when the four source documents of the Hexateuch (he believed Joshua belonged with the first five books). He took the J,E,D,P theory and made it the basis of a historical sketch of Israel's supposedly evolving faith. Wellhausen quit his post at a seminary, to his own hurt, out of a sense of integrity, and sought a purely academic position, after realizing what his approach would be. Wellhausen showed that assuming the Hexateuch is the earliest writing in the Bible fails to explain numerous elements of other parts of the Bible (for example, why it was not deemed wrong for Samuel to make offerings as a non-priest and to do so at high places). He believed that the prophets were earlier than the so-called Mosaic Torah. His theories tended to be counter to Judaism, so that the priestly laws (and later the rabbinic laws) are a legalism opposed to the earliest (allegedly best) free worship in the days of the prophets. As Gignilliat puts it, he pitted "prophecy against institution" and espoused a free worship in a Protestant style.

Herman Gunkel (1862-1932) is the father of form criticism. So much of what is written in the Bible had to have existed in the form of ideas, songs, poems, public readings, and stories before being written down. Comparing the Bible to Near Eastern literature, all the more we can see and theorize about pre-literary forms, early and later written forms, and also the possible settings in which stories and poems were used. Gunkel's interest was in these pre-literary forms, especially for things like worship texts (Psalms) and myth-like language about creation (the Spirit hovering, Leviathan, pillars of the earth, etc.). Gunkel (much like DeWette and Wellhausen) wanted to discover what the ancient Israelites believed at different points in history, to look at Israelite faith as the object of studying the Bible. The Bible is not inspired, said Gunkel, but he clearly believed it was inspiring. He is associated with the term sitz im leben or the life-setting of parts of the text. So, for example, he categorized Psalms and might conclude that a particular Psalm began as a public song of praise but that a later author added a personal lament to the pre-exisiting praise Psalm. Or he might conclude that Israel must have had annual enthronement ceremonies for the king and that certain Psalms were written for such occasions. Like Wellhausen he believed the earliest forms were purer and simpler. The final form of the text is not what is to be studied, but the layers must be found and their life-settings theorized to study the history of Israel's religion and learn from it as from any other history or literature.

Gerhard von Rad (1901-1971) pioneered the tradition-historical approach. He was "listening for the word of God in Israel's scriptural legacy" according to Gignilliat. His students, including Brevard Childs, regarded him as a genius and a powerfully persuasive teacher. Von Rad aligned himself with the Confessing Church against Nazi ideology (along with people like Bonhoeffer, Niemoller, and Barth). He opposed anti-Semitic readings of the Hebrew Bible. He emphasized Deuteronomy as a book of grace. Von Rad took Gunkel's work in a new direction, being interested in the final form, the written form, of the Hexateuch. He sought a theory about the stages of its writing and the faith of Israel as it changed through the various stages along the way. Von Rad theorized that one layer was a "settlement tradition" about the occupation of the land and an entirely separate "Sinai tradition" formed. These two traditions were combined in ways that lead to many of the noticeable discrepancies in the text. The J author did most of the heavy lifting in von Rad's view, putting the traditions together near the time of Solomon and making the patriarchal stories fit into the final form. His theory was able to see the final form of the Hexateuch (and the Hebrew Bible) as a movement from promise to fulfillment with an openness to the future that left room for Christ. Von Rad's work can be seen as a powerful rewriting of the history of Israel counter to Wellhausen's ideas.

William Foxwell Albright (1891-1971) might be seen as the "dean of biblical archaeologists" and would perhaps be the most religiously conservative of all the scholars mentioned. His genius is undoubtable. Unfortunately, his theory was flawed. What he sought -- a confirmation in the record of Near Eastern and Palestinian archaeology that the history of the Bible is essentially factual -- by means of the comparative method (comparing Bible texts with archaeology and Near Eastern texts) has not been demonstrated. Albright expected the spade to confirm the book. In his lifetime, he thought in many ways it did. Few of his conclusions are widely believed anymore. In terms of technical contribution, however, Albright is unparalleled. He developed the field of ceramic typology (locating styles of pottery in various eras and cultures to date archaeological layers) to a high level of precision and his rules of pottery typing are still the norm today. He knew the biblical history was not accurate in all details but sought to prove its essential truth in the "verifiable data" of archaeology. His critics afterward recognized that remains dug up from the ground are just as subject to interpretation as words on a page. Much of the value of archaeology is actually to illustrate, not to prove anything. It seems that Albright located the authority of the Bible in the events themselves more than the text.

Finally, Brevard Childs (1923-2007) is perhaps the last paradigm changer of the period of modern biblical studies (as opposed to post-modern biblical studies, which is still relatively young). The primary paradigm he changed with his canonical approach is to assert that the final form of the Bible as received by Judaism and Christianity as scripture is where divine authority lies. Childs accepts the basic results of critical study of the Hebrew Bible (and New Testament), but confesses faith in the message of the final text. There is no need to isolate layers other than in assisting with interpretation of the final form. The word "canon" or measure refers to the corpus of texts accepted as scripture in Judaism and/or Christianity. Childs affirmed both academic (critical) study and confessional (reading it as scripture) reading as necessary and compatible. Childs studied many fields, including rabbinics and patristics, and was widely learned in numerous fields he believed would aid his exegesis of scripture. His canonical approach ran counter to the tendencies of the scholarly world and yet his work was deemed important because he had clearly mastered the material. He saw the critical study and its tendency to divide scripture into historical layers as providing a sense of the depth of scripture while the final form is what gave it meaning. He believed in the idea of writers and editors have an intention in writing which could possibly be discovered (so he would not agree with reader-response approaches in post-modern studies). He saw God's hand working in the many generations who received the traditions that ended up in scripture, revised them, passed them down for other generations to revise and also pass on, up until the final form. It is the shape they ended with, not the shape they began with, that makes them scripture.

What I find to be the greatest strength of Gignilliat's A Brief History of Old Testament Criticism is its ability to summarize complex ideas, get at essential points, and from the point of view of faith-based and yet critical readers, to evaluate the thinkers and ideas that most shaped modern study of the Hebrew Bible. Gignilliat does not address the more recent post-modern approaches. Yet for the student who wonders who modern ideas about the Bible developed, this is a short (186 pages), readable guide that is a pleasure to read.

A helpful introduction
By Ethan R. Longhenry
An investigation into the history of Old Testament criticism through biographical inquiries into many of the major characters involved: Spinoza, de Wette, Wellhausen, Gunkel, von Rad, Albright, and Childs.

The author admits that his investigation is limited, that he comes about things with a conservative viewpoint and a high esteem for Childs, and that there is plenty more to say about the subject and about other figures involved.

Nevertheless, for a beginner or the interested observer, the book does well at introducing some of the major characters involved in OT criticism, their backgrounds, the ecclesiastical, academic, cultural, and philosophical influences in their lives and how they were guided by those influences and/or reacted against them, the great contributions (for better or worse) of each character, the impact they had on the field, and their enduring legacy to this day.

If you've always been interested in how OT criticism has come to be as it is, and why it places so much emphasis on certain foci, this book will prove very useful and helpful.

A wordy book on an interesting subject
By PL
As the title states, this book is an attempt to overview the history of study of the Old Testament in the modern era. The subject field is huge, so the author did what every wise historian does: he picked a few of the most interesting and helpful samples. The book is divided up into seven chapters, each one devoted to a different theologian or scholar, and bookended with an introduction and conclusion. The seven theologians are: Benedict Spinoza, WML De Wette, Julius Wellhausen, Herman Gunkel, Gerhard Von Rad, WF Albright, and Brevard S Childs. The first half of each chapter is a short biography and the second half is a summary and brief analysis of the scholar's work.

Overall, I have mixed feelings about this book. The biographical portions on each theologian are interesting, enjoyable to read, and provide a helpful context for each writer. The second half of each chapter, the summary and brief analysis of each writer’s work, are a mixed bag. Sometimes Gignilliat shines in this section, for instance when explaining the work of Von Rad or Child’s. At other times, I had difficulty grasping the concepts Gignilliat highlighted in a certain writer’s work, as in the explanation of Spinoza’s understanding of reason, theology, and philosophy. I left that chapter feeling that I couldn’t explain anything new about Spinoza. Certainly part of the difficulty is due to the task, not the writer: attempting to explain and analyse the life work of such important scholars in twenty pages is a significant challenge. However, at times I found Gignilliat’s writing unnecessarily wordy. Sometimes he used a long word where a short one would have done fine (contrary to CS Lewis’s oft-quoted advice!). Again, some allowance should be made for an author explaining technical details of scholarly work (e.g., the difference between Von Rad’s tradition criticism and Gunkel’s form criticism!), but I still felt that the language was overly complex in many places.

I would give this book 2.5 stars, but since that's not an option I rounded up to 3.

"What's Your Problem?" describes the problem-solving mathematics program that author Penny Skinner developed with a class of children over a two-and-a-half year period. It is a program that can be used n conjunction with any mathematics curriculum since its central concern is teaching style, rather than content. She provides teachers with clear and detailed information on how they can set up similar programs with their own classes. All the familiar topics in three mathematical strands-number, space, and measurement-are introduced by means of problem-solving activities and the mathematics is integrated with other curriculum areas, particularly language work."What's Your Problem?" also includes lots of original games, illustrated examples of the children's work and discussions of the problems posed, many of which the children have generated themselves. This is a book to inspire and assist teachers who wish to adopt a problem-centered approach to teaching mathematics.

So impressed with the activities in this book!
By JoanOH
If you have a child or grandchild ages 8 to 12 or 13, buy this book. Buy it now. This is a wonderful way to encourage your child to do some fun and sometimes educational activities in those "I'm bored" times. The 101 activities are very diversified -- from "learn how to use chopsticks" to "paint like a famous artist" to "spin a basketball on your fingetip". Just a wonderful variety with specific instructions. There are sports themed tasks, cooking, physical, mental, artistic, mathematical, and just plain fun. I plan on giving this book to my 9 year old grandson when he visits. Some tasks we will do together, some he can do on his own. It's just a wonderful book and I plan on spreading the word about this to all my parent and grandparent friends. Do your child a favor - buy this today!

101 Answers to the Question "What Can I Do?" ...
By delicateflower152
“101 Things to Do Before You Grow Up” is exactly what you need when your hear the all too familiar refrain “I’m bored, what can I do?” Laura Dower has compiled a group of 101 activities that should provide children/grandchildren with a wide variety of choices that will meet almost any interest they may have. A colorful cardboard jacket covers the spiral-bound pages of the book. The book lies flat when opened.

From astronomy – “go stargazing!” to aerodynamics – “launch a plastic-bag parachute”, from historic preservation – “make a time capsule” to developing an unusual skill – “learn to juggle three objects”, from fostering an interest in becoming multi-lingual – “count to ten in five different languages” to science – “tell time without a clock”, and more, this book provides activities for a wide range of ages.

Few of the 101 choices require objects or materials not commonly found in the home. Cost for materials is minimal, yet the entertainment value of these activities is great. Clear, step-by-step instructions are easy to follow. Not only do some of the activities have educational aspects – e.g. “learn to read music”, many impart valuable life-skills – e.g. learning to tie three common knots.

I liked that there was a list of required materials given when the activity required them. Tips for making appropriate choices, safety tips, and informational factoids enhanced different activity selections. A banner at the end of an activity provided space for the date it was completed and a “square” in which a small sticker could be placed.

“101 Things to Do Before You Grow Up” is a wonderful book that will engage your children/grandchildren and will entertain them as they work to complete an activity. There are choices that are appropriate for children as young as five-years old and others that are appropriate for ‘tweens. In this era of electronic toys and on-line entertainment, “101 Things to Do Before You Grow Up” is a refreshing return to simpler, but equally entertaining activities.

What a Wonderful Idea! Great as a Gift
By K. Groh
This is such a great idea! I'm sure if we all sat down we could, over time, come up with a long list of fun things for kids to do in their (ample) spare time. But why do that when this book is already available. It is super cute with a hard cover and a lay-flat wire coil spine. The spine makes it great for keeping the book open as reference when trying something out.

The pages are really colorful and illustrated and all of the tasks are in simple and short steps - most of them fitting on one page. Some tasks might take a few hours, other just a minute or two. Perfect for the range of attention span for some days.

I really like the check off at the bottom of each page. There is a box for checking off or filling in DONE with a spot for the date completed. Many items can be done solo but many are fun group/family/one-on-one activities.

My daughter is excited to get through as much as possible.

This is also a great idea for a birthday gift. In fact, I may just get a few to stash in the 'birthday closet'!

Passed SPHR 1st Time
By Peter S
Herzberg vs Hofstede, Civil Rights Act 1964 vs 1991, NLRB, labor unions vs management ULPs, WARN, and if all that was gibberish to you - then you need this book. Let me start off by saying, I wish I had read this book first! I bought this book after having purchased a couple of other guides and this one is by far the easiest to read and the most practical with down to earth information and strategies. If you plan on taking either the PHR or SPHR exam, then put this book in your arsenal. Obviously, this test is one that requires a significant amount of preparation and the material can get complicated/daunting rather quickly. The book has an easy to read format, good test taking tips, and I found the online resources very helpful though somewhat limited. You get 2 practice PHR exams and 2 practice SPHR exams for online resources. The tests explain the "why this answer is right" without making you feel like a moron, which I appreciated. Also, if you can answer the test prep questions, then you will be able to answer the questions on the real test with easy (prep seemed harder to me than the real thing).

Like the title says, I used this book as a part of my studying process and passed the SPHR test the first time I took it.

I'm studying for my PHR exam. I find this book to be very helpful and similar to my other resources in terms of questions and content. The thing I liked most is that this is concise and easy to follow. I did like the Exam alerts in this book. It kept me focused. This book also included some better explanations than the other book. I used this book heavily for Strategic Management, HRD and Employment. I would strongly recommend this because provides so many onlines resourcrs to guide me through my studies ( checklists, professional associations and YouTube channels). Also, the questions were more difficult in this book. Don't get discouraged if you miss a few the author helps you to think critically as HR professionals. I spend my weekends in the library enjoying this book

I LOVE this book- there is nothing else like it out on the market. The point of it is to provide a road map to studying. It doesn’t cover every little bit of the exam content but rather gave me tons of ideas on where to go to study outside the traditional channels of just a textbook. This is super helpful for me as I don’t learn well just by sitting down and reading straight from a book. I used it to supplement my other materials and to figure out my pass strategy based on my strengths and weaknesses. Just passed my exam this month!!

The Stranger, by Albert Camus

Through the story of an ordinary man unwittingly drawn into a senseless murder on an Algerian beach, Camus explored what he termed "the nakedness of man faced with the absurd." First published in 1946; now in a new translation by Matthew Ward.

Amazon.com Review
The Stranger is not merely one of the most widely read novels of the 20th century, but one of the books likely to outlive it. Written in 1946, Camus's compelling and troubling tale of a disaffected, apparently amoral young man has earned a durable popularity (and remains a staple of U.S. high school literature courses) in part because it reveals so vividly the anxieties of its time. Alienation, the fear of anonymity, spiritual doubt--all could have been given a purely modern inflection in the hands of a lesser talent than Camus, who won the Nobel Prize in 1957 and was noted for his existentialist aesthetic. The remarkable trick of The Stranger, however, is that it's not mired in period philosophy.

The plot is simple. A young Algerian, Meursault, afflicted with a sort of aimless inertia, becomes embroiled in the petty intrigues of a local pimp and, somewhat inexplicably, ends up killing a man. Once he's imprisoned and eventually brought to trial, his crime, it becomes apparent, is not so much the arguably defensible murder he has committed as it is his deficient character. The trial's proceedings are absurd, a parsing of incidental trivialities--that Meursault, for instance, seemed unmoved by his own mother's death and then attended a comic movie the evening after her funeral are two ostensibly damning facts--so that the eventual sentence the jury issues is both ridiculous and inevitable.

Meursault remains a cipher nearly to the story's end--dispassionate, clinical, disengaged from his own emotions. "She wanted to know if I loved her," he says of his girlfriend. "I answered the same way I had the last time, that it didn't mean anything but that I probably didn't." There's a latent ominousness in such observations, a sense that devotion is nothing more than self-delusion. It's undoubtedly true that Meursault exhibits an extreme of resignation; however, his confrontation with "the gentle indifference of the world" remains as compelling as it was when Camus first recounted it. --Ben Guterson

From Library Journal
The new translation of Camus's classic is a cultural event; the translation of Cocteau's diary is a literary event. Both translations are superb, but Ward's will affect a naturalized narrative, while Browner's will strengthen Cocteau's reemerging critical standing. Since 1946 untold thousands of American students have read a broadly interpretative, albeit beautifully crafted British Stranger . Such readers have closed Part I on "door of undoing" and Part II on "howls of execration." Now with the domestications pruned away from the text, students will be as close to the original as another language will allow: "door of unhappiness" and "cries of hate." Browner has no need to "write-over" another translation. With Cocteau's reputation chiefly as a cineaste until recently, he has been read in French or not at all. Further, the essay puts a translator under less pressure to normalize for readers' expectations. Both translations show the current trend to stay closer to the original. Review
“The Stranger is a strikingly modern text and Matthew Ward’s translation will enable readers to appreciate why Camus’s stoical anti-hero and devious narrator remains one of the key expressions of a postwar Western malaise, and one of the cleverest exponents of a literature of ambiguity.” –from the Introduction by Peter Dunwoodie

An existentialist tour de force of literature
By Daniel Jolley
The Stranger is a haunting, challenging masterpiece of literature. While it is fiction, it actually manages to express the complex concepts and themes of existential philosophy better than the movement's most noted philosophical writings and almost as well as Dostoyevsky's Notes From the Underground. This is a new kind of literature. The story in and of itself is rather simple, but the glimpses into the intellect and feelings of the protagonist are the sources of the magic of this novel. M.Meursault is a normal man in Algiers, France. When we meet him, he is on the way to his mother's funeral, where he says very little, expresses no remorse over her death, and immediately returns home. The next day, he goes swimming, meets Marie, takes her to see a comedy that night, and spends the next few weeks living his normal life and occassionally seeing Marie. He ends up getting indirectly involved in a dispute between his neighbor Raymond and a girl who did him wrong, and the conflict culminates in an encounter on the beach between Raymond, Meursault, and the girl's Arab brother and friend. Raymond is cut with a knife, but the whole episode seems to be resolved. Meursault, though, decides later to take another walk on the beach because he is too worn out to go inside and rejoin his friends, and somewhat inexplicably he ends up killing one of the Arabs. The second half of the novel examines Meursault's thoughts in relation to his trial and sentence; interestingly, he is prosecuted as much if not more for his moral character than for the crime of murder itself.
Basically, Meursault does not care about anything, does not feel anything for anyone (including himself, for the most part). He looks at life objectively and determines that it really doesn't matter whether he does something or not in the overall scheme of things. When Marie expresses her love for him, he tells her he will marry her if it will make her happy but that he cannot say he really loves her. He expresses no remorse for killing the Arab because it just happened; he had no intention of doing it, but the fact is that he did, so there's little point in dwelling on it. He cares about the present and, to a lesser degree, the future, but the past is meaningless for the very reason that it is the past. Meursault sees things as they are; rather than rely on flights of fantasy and imagination (the typical tools of the Romanticists), he deals with facts in the here and now rather than run from them and has no problem admitting the seemingly obvious fact that man is a creature of utter depravity. He rejects religion; since each man must eventually die, what does it matter what he does while on earth. It is a man's hopes and dreams that weigh down his very existence; Marsault can only find happiness by cleansing himself of all such illusory notions.
Needless to say, this is not an uplifting book, but it is an engaging, thought-provoking one. While Camus cannot be called a true existentialist in his own philosophical outlook, his fiction does epitomize many existentialist ideas. Marsault is a protagonist like no other in literature--you cannot like him, he is obviously guilty of killing a man in cold blood, and he is of a cold-hearted nature, yet you do understand some of his thinking, find yourself more and more interested in his dark outlook on life, and have to admit that much of what he believes makes sense.

Philosophically Deep and Moving Book
By David Swan
When I first started reading `The Stranger' by Albert Camus it seemed rather dull. It's a first person account from a somewhat bland character named Meursault, the titular `Stranger'. While working my way through the book I had to wonder if an alternate translation, `The Outsider', would be more appropriate for `L'tranger'. Meursault is a Frenchmen living on Algeria but in no way is he a stranger. He has a circle of friends, a job and even a girlfriend. What sets him apart from humanity is his possibly pathological indifference to just about anything whether it be abuse of a dog, abuse of a woman or even the death of his own mother. Not that he engages in abuse it's just that he seems unaffected by the suffering of others. Other descriptions I've read on this book have described Meursault as honest to a fault with this being his downfall. I'm not sure that gives people the correct impression. Meursault's honesty is not the kind where you tell a fat woman she's fat. His downfall is more his inability to feign sorrow, regret or empathy. When his girlfriend asks if he loves her he considers it and answers "no" without any thought that the answer might be painful to hear. About half way through the book, in a bizarre set of circumstances, Meursault ends up killing a man and when asked by the police if he feels regret he says he never looks on the past with regret and in this case feels only vexation. There is no evident malice only utter insensitivity.

Philosophically The Stranger is one of the most intriguing and moving books I have ever read particularly the final act where Meursault confronts the priest who attempts to lead him to the Christian God in the last days before his execution. Despite the perceived indifference he exhibits throughout the book Meursault has a consistent and well defined philosophy of existence. In this moment Meursault disgorges everything he has on the hapless priest and lays bare his soul (so to speak). Knowing that his death is but weeks, days or perhaps hours away, he achieves a moment of clarity seeing his place in the universe, a universe even more indifferent than himself. Camus never absolves him of his crime but in a sense Meursault rises above the simple act of killing a man, above his imprisonment and above life itself. He achieves full acceptance of his existence and place in the universe and in that moment transcends life and God. I`m genuinely saddened that I'm not able to read the final chapter in its original French. If the translation is this good I can hardly imagine how amazing the original must be.

This is the kind of book that one could read and ponder over and over again and I have a feeling I will. There is a considerable amount of symbolism throughout particularly the scorching sun which seems to continually oppress Meursault until he can take it no more. It starts off very slowly and builds throughout. I've never been on trial and certainly never been on death row but Camus gave Meursault an inner dialogue that rang so true it felt more real than any other portrayal I've seen or read. Despite his crime and often callous view of the suffering of others Camus created a character so real and open to the reader that I couldn't help but pity him terribly for his situation but in the end Meursault found peace regardless of the outcome. If you haven't read this book you really should and it's a short read so if you don't find it as profound as I did at least you wont have to endure it for long.

A powerfully disturbing and bleak novel
By Robert Moore
Although Albert Camus had achieved some fame as a journalist in his native Algiers in the thirties and as a writer for the French resistance during WW II, he first achieved an international critical reputation with the publication of this classic novel in 1946. The portrait of the detached, unfeeling, uncommitted, amoral, perpetually abstracted Meursault is one of the most haunting in 20th century literature. For many, it is the supreme 20th century literary depiction of nihilism. Unquestionably it is one of the premier literary efforts of the century, though Camus managed several other books just as powerful and superb in their own way, in particular THE PLAGUE, THE MYTH OF SISYPHUS, and THE FALL.
Meursault reminds me so much of figures from the paintings of Manet. In painting after painting, Manet depicted individuals alone in crowds, failing or refusing to interact or even acknowledge the others in the frame. In one famous painting, a lower middle class girl sits alone in her own little orb, sitting beside an upper class gentleman, neither acknowledging the existence of the other, both self-contained, seemingly detached from the busy world surrounding them. Behind them, a barmaid drinks a beer, equally oblivious to everyone and everything around her. They might all be on separate desert islands. Manet repeats this in painting after painting. Meursault seems almost as if he had stepped out of one of those paintings. He can at least communicate with others, socialize with them, but he cannot express strong moral sentiments or develop affectionate (as opposed to sexual) attachments.
This is not a happy book. The story deals with Meursault's almost accidental killing of an Arab whose sister had been harmed by one of his acquaintances, but the novel trivializes everything--the killing, his subsequent arrest, his imprisonment, his trial and conviction, and his sentencing. The closest the novel comes to a happy sentiment is near the end when Meursault imagines how much nicer it would be to witness an execution rather than be executed, to have to puke in revulsion than to literally lose one's head to the guillotine.
Camus would never write such a despairing book again. THE PLAGUE the next year would come close, but not close, while THE FALL would seem almost optimistic and upbeat in comparison. But for those who want to find perhaps the quintessential expression of what we like to think of as existentialism, this could stand as the premier literary instance.
