About the Author

Jeanne Ellis Ormrod received her�B.A. in psychology from Brown University and her M.S. and Ph.D. in educational psychology from The Pennsylvania State University. She earned licensure in school psychology through postdoctoral work at Temple University and the University of Colorado at Boulder and has worked as a middle school geography teacher and school psychologist. She was Professor of Educational Psychology at the University of Northern Colorado until 1998, when she moved east to return to her native New England. She is currently affiliated with the University of New Hampshire, where she occasionally teaches courses in educational psychology and research methods. She has published numerous research articles on cognition and memory, cognitive development, and giftedness, but she is probably best known for this textbook and four others: Educational Psychology (currently in its seventh edition); Essentials of Educational Psychology (currently in its second edition); Child Development and Education (co-authored with Teresa McDevitt, currently in its fourth edition); and Practical Research (co-authored with Paul Leedy, currently in its ninth edition). With her three children now grown and out on their own, she lives in New Hampshire with her husband Richard.

This is an amazingly well written text. Ms Ormrod actually practices what she preaches, so the book is organised as an exemplar of how to help students learn. I bought the book as an optional text for a Masters in Education, then I sat up one night to check it out. It became compulsive reading, very hard to put down. It gives a broad overview of Educational Psychology thinking over a wide period of time, and encapsulates it. It is full of useful references. Many of my colleagues have borrowed this book for various courses and for course development for educational projects.

Human learning gives a good basic understanding of learning theory for teachers and others who are interested in educational psychology. There are some very good examples for all theories discussed. The book jumps around a bit and some of the explanations are too technical.

Excellent text for an undergraduate course

This textbook is a very basic, easy to read book that is great for sophomores, juniors, and seniors in their undergraduate studies. The concepts are presented in a simple and concise manner, and unlike many psychology texts, this one isn't bombarded with names and frivolous details. What you get instead are the key players, and the most important facts of experiments. That's what I like about this book, it's to the point.

Regarding the poor review from the graduate student, I understand where he or she is coming from. I would hate to have this book assigned for a graduate class, due to its elementary nature. However, for an undergraduate student- it presents the most crucial information in layman's terms(seeming to understand that students commonly take 4-5 classes at a time).

For those who are interested in more of a biological/modern neuroscience approach, I would recommend purchasing books by Eric Kandel, instead.

This book has so much information crammed into it so it is not an easy read. But for those who want to know the intricacies and how the different tools (Lean and TOC) work together un synergy to create a best practice, this is an excellent book. The writer gives the principle then practical steps how to implement. I feel that after reading this book I understand more why projects take longer and how I can shorten it.

Over all this book is accully quite wonderful. Has a lot of different facial features for you to practice on as well as different types of chili's to work on whether it's human or other but I do have my own thought or rather my own comment of the "furry" aspect of the book. From what I can tell there more human like than anthropomorphic animals, I'd say there more neko than anything else just different colored skin. (But that's just my own thoughts)

This book shows you how to draw chibis and other things. I've never attempted any Japanese style art until now. I recently picked up an interest in it and wanted to learn. This book doesn't exactly show you the basic beginning sketch. If you are good at copying without sketching then I highly recommend this book. It worked great for me. I draw mostly on my ipad.

Cute and helpful!

Bought this for my eleven year old who loves to draw anime. She really likes this book and uses it often. The little chibi characters are really cute and the step by step instructions are excellent. It includes sections on how to draw facial expressions, body laguage, action, beginning a sketch all the way to color. The only thing missing is a "how-to" on shading but you can just look at their examples.

She also uses "Manga for the Beginner" (also by Christopher Hart) and "Manga Moods" (by Saori Takarai) both of which I would highly recommend.

Balanced views on a complex topic

This highly readable book is useful both for the general reader who wants to know what globalization is about and for the professor who wants a book that students will understand and enjoy. I teach a course on globalization and searched long and hard for the right book to accompany the course. I have been totally satisfied with this one. The articles are clear, informative, and balanced. There is a variety of viewpoints, ranging from the pro-globalization Thomas Friedman to critics, such as Jeremy Brecher. The breadth of topics is excellent. A few examples include agricultural issues, environment, immigration, cybercrime, terrorism, slavery, gender, racism, and global movements.

Melissa "Missy" Franklin is a competitive swimmer and five-time Olympic Gold medalist. Among her numerous distinctions, she holds the world record for the 200-meter backstroke. Missy is a very engaging and entertaining writer and it was fascinating to read her story. As a swim coach in Colorado, I am always seeking to inspire my kids and reading the true stories of athletes like Missy can help to better understand how to help empower my swimmers to success. We have met Missy at swim meets around the state and she is just as gracious in person as she seems in the pages of this book! This is a great read!

This is a wonderful and honest book

I finished the book "Relentless Spirit" on the plane back from Florida yesterday and want to tell you how much I loved it and admired it. While I was reading it felt like they were talking instead of me reading. It was such a real and interesting story not only of their lives but of the struggles we all go thru in our lives. I could totally relate to the successes and the failures they have experienced and those that have happened to my family in my 71 years on this earth. I was especially moved by Missy's conversation with the Oncology Doc on the plane from Rio and his ability to put failures in perspective and their family's pursuit of doing their best at whatever they do. Great book. Eddie

This is a wonderful grief journal. Almost too nice to write in! It has some wonderful poetry and sayings throughout the journal pages. The intro has tips on how to get the most from journaling - encouraging the expression of emotions.

A precious companion through grief

When my young sister died suddenly, I was devastated. I wandered into a bookstore and somehow found this book. Although it is a journal, I didn't intend to write in the book when I bought it. I just wanted to read the quotes on life, loss and grieving on each page. They really captured my many complex and painful feelings. Now, several years later, I still remember "The presence of that absence is everywhere." The quotes were also short, which helped when grief prevented me from focusing on anything for long.
I did end up writing in the book, and drawing pictures, and inserting stickers and poems she would have liked. It has been my companion through this grief. And now it's a treasured momento with stories of her life and our relationship.
I hope it will be reprinted soon but, if not, it is worth special ordering.
