Who doesn't love Goosebumps?!

My son LOVES Goosebumps, and this story was just as good as all the rest. This book had my son nose-deep in a book for a week, and that gave mom a quiet house and time to relax. Goosebumps are great for giving mom and dad some quiet time, with kids enjoying their reading time:)

Interesting study of long-distance hikers

Fondren gives us a sociological treatise of Appalachian Trail hikers. She concentrates on thru-hikers, those who hike the trail in one season. Why do it? How do the hikers interact with each other and with town people? As a section hiker who completed the trail in 1998, I realize that I'm no longer up to date with current trail mores. But I did recognize several hikers in Fondren's book by their trail names.
If there's one thing that really grated on me, it was her constant use of the word "stranger" or worse "complete stranger". The author is playing on readers fear of walking, talking, sleeping with other hikers. She wants to hype up the tension between people, tension that I never thought existed I the first place.
Still, there aren't too many studies of long-distance hikers for the general public and this is an important book.

A focus on what is often missing from the worldview discussion

Many worldview books--or books on Christian apologetics--focus heavily on attacking the "opponent's" worldview. They point out the deficiencies in various worldviews that contradict the Christian faith and offer ways to address, or rather, attack, these deficiencies. There is certainly a place for this in the field of Christian apologetics and I am thankful for such fine treatments of the subject by writers like Cornelius Van Til, Greg Bahnsen, John Frame, Gary DeMar, Douglas Wilson, etc. Christians are bombarded with attacks from intellectuals to television pundits to the man on the street. We need to know and be reminded of the solid intellectual and philosophical strength of our worldview.

However, what many of the worldview/apologetics books overlook is that it takes a listening ear to hear what our opposition is saying. Furthermore, in our zeal to win over souls by nearly combative evangelism, we often forget that we are sharing the gospel with people--fellow human beings. (Yeah, I know; many who oppose Christians are anything but civil and some treat us as if we're less than human.)

Stanley J. Ward's book reminds us that when we share the gospel, we are dealing with fellow human beings. Yes, he encourages readers to know their faith and faith story, but he also gives some helpful reminders about human communication and the skill of listening. Evangelism is about winning souls, but the job of conversion belongs to the Holy Spirit. Ward explains that we ought to focus on the conversation (which he describes as a process that occurs over the course of several discussions), and leave the conversions to the Holy Spirit.

This does not mean that Ward soft hands the conflict that often occurs between believer and unbeliever. He just chooses to focus on the communication process so that meaningful conversations can take place... and continue over time. He's not saying that all evangelism is "friendship evangelism," but he is certainly saying that we interact with non-believers in a friendly manner.

This book is a short, readable, and honest addition to the ever-growing catalog of books on worldview. Ward allows us brief glimpses into his own journey as a Christ-follower and a sharer of the gospel by including "conversations" that he's had with students at the school where he teaches. Along the way, we see that he has grown into the conversational approach--and it hasn't always been pretty. If we take heed to his argument about focusing more on the conversations we can have with unbelievers and less on worrying so about converting them, then his book serves its purpose.

I give the book four stars because while I agree with Ward's conversational approach, I think more information on addressing specific worldviews would be helpful. Still, he does include a good annotated bibliography of various worldview books for further study. I suspect that a companion volume that helps address the nuances and beliefs of various worldviews is in the works.

Great resource, especially for young adults and new adult Christians

Worldview Conversations, the latest project from Stanley J. Ward, Bible Chairperson and Worldview Director for The Brook Hill School in Bullard, TX, is a welcome addition in Christian apologetics. Far too often, we learn how to defend the faith with reason, logic, and facts. Far too rarely do we learn how to do so under the precepts of I Peter 3:15, "with gentleness and respect" (ESV).

Soon-to-be-Doctor Ward gives us practical advice about holding conversations with non-Christians. His methods focus on understanding and compassion, not on "scoring points" or "winning" arguments. He deftly explains the important difference between the "conversion" approach and the "conversation" approach.

This volume is peppered with vignettes which illustrate his personal experiences developing and employing his method. These stories show real-world examples of success and failure of various approaches, and show us all how we can better view our friends and acquaintances.

I would suggest this should be on every Christian leader's bookshelf, especially those who deal with people between the ages of 12 and 25. I would further suggest that "Conversations" classes should be developed by local church congregations to help us all implement the wisdom which came from Stanley Ward's experiences. Lastly, I would suggest those who study this book also load the Napkin Theology videos, also from Dr. Ward, onto their mobile devices for quick and easy illustration when in discussion with non-Christians.

Worldview Conversations is a great book. It is clear, clean, concise, clever, and cogent. It took me deeper into life. I highly recommend it.

Your Own Life Coach

After reading "Guided by Bliss," an article in Reader's Digest (June 2013), I thought my son would benefit from the featured book, "The Bliss List." As I read the first few pages, I decided to keep it for myself. It's like having your own life coach just as the magazine article said. I finished reading it in one night and ordered additional copies for my son and all my relatives. I can't think of a better gift. Thought provoking, insightful, entertaining, and applicable to everyone.

AWESOME BOOK

This is a great book for anyone looking for a job or a new fulfilling career. The Bliss List helps you figure out what you want vs. don't want and then helps you figure out how to achieve your goal.

J.P. Hansen does a great job using real world example to help you write a resume that gets noticed. He then gives you great advice on answering interview questions and negotiating the offer. After I read this book and opened myself up to it's teaching I had job activity going through the roof and landed a job within a month. It's a must read.

Futaba should hire Mr. Holt for their manuals

This is an excellent document, written clearly and full of useful information. I learned quite a few things in the process of reading it, and I have been in this hobby for more than 7 years. I liked the explanations about programmable mixes, generally very poorly covered by most radio manuals, not just Futaba. I also liked the information about being able to turn the transmitter on, while disabling the RF section, so you can play with programming at your convenience without discharging the battery too much. The examples in the second section of the book are well chosen to provide further general insight in the use of this radio system, beyond their specific application. In general, I can confidently state that this book has made me warm up to a radio system which, while certainly very reliable and feature-rich, has in the past turned me off mainly because of the poor (archaic?) user interface and unusually poor user documentation.

Brilliant

This is the best five dollars that anyone with a Futaba 8/12/14FG can spend. This radio was quite a departure from earlier generations of computer radios as it approaches flight control surfaces, control functions, and transmitter switches and levers as separate sets of parameters that can be matched up and combined in a large number of ways. The manual that comes with the radio does not do a good job of explaining this broad approach and the powerful opportunities that it presents. After paying close attention to this book, it all makes sense.

Frustrated by the documentation provided by Futaba, in 2011 Malcolm Holt wrote a couple of articles explaining what the new Futaba radios were all about, based on his experimentation. Search for < Programming the Futaba 8FG Malcolm Holt > and < Futaba 8FG Supplementary Notes Malcolm Holt >. These are accessible on a number of internet sites. His step-by-step programming instructions transformed the way I had the radio set up to fly an electric glider, and the supplementary notes helped make sense of the radio architecture.

Malcolm has taken this all to a new level of usefulness with this e-book, which comprehensively and systematically explains how the radio functions work and provides complete set-ups to illustrate how they can be integrated. Having read the book you can set up planes with confidence, and if you want further insights you can pick your way through his hundreds of posts on the RCuniverse sites where he patiently answers many questions and provides a constant stream of clever solutions to people with problems. You will unfortunately be fooling around with PrintScreen trying to make hard copies of various pages of this book to carry down to your workbench to work on your plane and to make notes as you customize his ideas for your own circumstances.

I hope enough money trickles down from these e-book sales to buy Malcolm a few well-deserved beers, and the folks at Futaba adequately recognize him for providing documentation and support that makes their radios actually worth owning.

Explaining the 14SG programming

Easy reading and informative. Explains programming the Futaba 14SG in an easy to understand way. This book is a very valuable addition the the factory programming manual in that it makes sense. The factory manual is hard to follow and confusing.
