From the Micronesian Yap islands' 12-foot stone "coins" to today's paper currencies backed only by fiat, Nobel-laureate economist Friedman ( Free to Choose ) here examines anomalies of world monetary history, including the effect of successive 19th-century gold ore discoveries and refining improvements on U.S. and British tender. He traces American currency's long, contentious gold-silver bimetalist saga, marked by the so-called Congressional coinage "crime of 1873" and ending with William Jennings Bryan's unsuccessful "Cross of Gold" presidential campaign in 1896. Friedman cites harsh lessons from postwar hyperinflation in many countries and declares that Roosevelt's 1933 silver-buying program may have skewed China's silver-based economy toward eventual communism. Uncontrolled money growth is the cause of inflation, the author stresses, and only monetary reform, despite undesirable side effects like unemployment, can cure it. Abstruse, theoretical and chiefly for the initiate, the book recycles parts of earlier works by Friedman, who himself suggests here that the general reader might wish to skip a particularly challenging chapter.

A lively, enlightening introduction to monetary history from the libertarian economist whose contributions to the quantity theory of money earned him a Nobel Prize in 1976. Starting from the premise that no society or individual is unaffected by monetary policy (which centers on control of a nation's money supply), Friedman (co-author, Tyranny of the Status Quo, 1984, etc.) offers a quick and simplified briefing on monetary theory that stresses, among other matters, one of his favorite themes--that ``inflation is always and everywhere a monetary phenomenon.'' His stage set, Friedman ranges widely over time and place in demonstrating that there invariably is more than meets the eye to monetary events. He recounts, for example, how an 1873 coinage law had unintended consequences for American politics and economics over the next couple of decades. The author moves on to link the 1887 invention in Scotland of a process to extract gold from low-grade South African ore to the frustration of William Jennings Bryan's presidential aspirations in 1896 and beyond, moving smoothly into an accessible discussion of bimetallism. Friedman also makes a plausible case for the proposition that FDR's silver-purchase program during the 1930's hastened the Communist takeover of mainland China after WW II. Covered as well (in a prescriptive anti-Keynesian context) are upward price spirals down through the ages, the collapse of the Bretton Woods accord, fiat money, specie, the European Monetary System, and efforts by Third World countries to peg their currencies to the US dollar. Everyone you ever wanted to know about money but were afraid to ask

Friedman is perhaps best know to the general public for his vigorous defense of free market economics and limited government political philosophy. Within the academic world, however, Friedman is known for his economic theory of monetarism. Here Friedman again assumes the role of popular educator, but now does so to explain the nature and importance of currency. Friedman challenges the way most people think of money, indeed destroys some things most would take for granted. Money is, first and foremost, a social construct, and the value and usefulness of money can be enhanced or eroded as people gain or lose trust in a currency. Most of the book is a straightforward explanation of the nature of currency and the history of money - particularly in the United States. But Friedman does deviate from this basic purpose for a single chapter as he delves into some of the nitty gritty details of monetary economics. It's a chapter that, by his own admission, can and perhaps should be skipped by those lacking a firm grasp of economics, though its inclusion is worthy for those with some background in economics who still retain illusions about the nature of money.

Read. This. Book.

Before you spout off about monetary policy, the Fed, central banks, fractional reserves, "banksters", or paper money, Read. This. Book. This book provides important historical insight, and gives a clearer idea of what money is. This book also clears up what inflation is, and what causes it, and how even gold-backed money can be inflationary. It even provides insight into the change from the old Democratic Party to the modern progressive Democratic Party, as well as the background on one of the most famous speeches in US history (for many years THE most famous speech). And it provides the story of how our shortsighted and then-protectionist monetary policy weakened the government in China and helped pave the way for the Communist takeover. A must read.

Very simple and clear explanation of monetary ideas

This book from Milton Friedman is the first one I read from him, although I've watched a lot of videos at youtube and other online channels with him. The monetary things are explained in his simple and clear style and while reading I get insights about things that were very messed up in my head before that. Highly recommend for general understanding of the problems of today's society like inflation, goverment regulations and policies and money. There are also some description of how the FED and the other central banks function, as well as general explanation of what money are. There are 2-3 chapters that are targeted at more experienced economists with some math formulas and statistics but in general the book is not scientific and is contributing to each mind that reads it.

About the Author
Don Norman is co-founder of the Nielsen Norman Group, an executive consulting firm that helps companies produce human-centered products and services. He is Breed Professor of Design Emeritus at Northwestern University and Professor Emeritus at the University of California, San Diego, where he was founding chair of the Department of Cognitive Science and chair of the Department of Psychology. He has served as Vice President of Apple Computer's Advanced Technology Group, and his many books include "Emotional Design," "The Design of Future Things," and most recently, "Living with Complexity."

Great book - no matter what your profession

Finally I got a chance to read this amazing book. Don Norman treats design very methodically and shows that good design is not a black box but something even more analytical people can understand and apply.
There are many important lessons but I found the concepts of discoverability, affordance, signifiers, feedbacks, mappings and constraints a simple, yet a powerful model to understand design.
I am not a designer by a far stretch but I can now appreciate good vs bad design with a deeper understanding of the designer's intent in building something. Even of design is not your field, you will greatly benefit from the book and you will realize that design is not just a touchy feely topic.

Although, I would have to say that for a design book, the images are not printed very well (in the paper back edition). And the during introducing the core concepts, in the first chapter, the author forgot to include 'constraints'. Also the order of these terms keep changing though out the book. This does not align well with the mapping concept the author so strongly professes.

However, now that this edition is out, don't get the previous version, since this one has far more relevant examples including hand held devices. As an additional resource, there is also a design course on udacity offered by Don Norman.

Half as long would have been twice as good.

The good:

All three stars I'm giving this are for the content. Norman's insights and principles are worthwhile and very useful. I don't agree with all of them, but most of them seem sound and the ones that don't still bring up good points to discuss.

The bad:

I wish an editor could convince him to cut this book in half. It's obvious that Norman is a academic and has been for a long time. He has that thing, that ivory tower myopia that comes off as pompous and self congratulatory. I had a really hard time wading through his never ending stories in the service of simple points. GET TO THE POINT, MAN. He also uses psychological terms that are terrible to try and parse (associative activation error? Are you kidding me? How about we call that the "ring ring, come in" error, so maybe people can remember it.) It's surprising that a book about design is so poorly designed on so many levels. Part of that is because this edition is an Amazon print on demand, and the layout sucks. Good lessons in here about how NOT to layout text. Part of it is also up to Norman, though. He likes using italics, I think as asides or illustrations of a point, but it's not consistent, and really just why, man? Why do that? Accept the cultural constraints of typography.

My advice is to read the last chapter, which is a nice succinct roundup of all the main points. If you want more information on any topic, look back through the book.

a bit tedious but plenty of useful information if you wade through it

Some good information here, but the author suffers from an overabundance of 'completeness' in explanation. The author is clearly an authority on the topic of human interaction and design, and can go on endlessly about common mistakes made by designers. But you may find yourself skimming through much of the information as you find many pages are taken to make fairly simple or obvious points.

About the Author
Alison Trewhela has been practicing yoga since 1979 and has taught yoga since 1983. She is dedicated to the Iyengar method of teaching yoga and a teacher member of The Iyengar Yoga Association (UK), IYAUK, and a committee member of SWIYI. Alison holds Intermediate Junior III certificate (IYAUK 1997) and has specialized in developing appropriate yoga short courses for beginners with low back pain leading research into yoga's efficacy as a treatment for low back pain with York Trials Unit at The University of York, funded by Arthritis Research UK. She also leads annual Special Study Units for Medical Students, where they learn about the experience and application of yoga and teaches therapeutic and educative yoga to small groups for conditions such as women s and musculo-skeletal problems. Alison resides in Cornwall, UK.

Anna Semlyen, MSc Health Economics (York), British Wheel of Yoga (BWY) Dip, Ayurveda Foundations, Reiki. Anna has taught yoga since 1996 and runs Yoga in York. Anna is Specialist Advisor to the BWY on Yoga and Healthy Backs and Therapeutic Yoga Research. She worked for the NHS 1992-3 and as a Health Economics Research Fellow at The University of York 1993-1998 before becoming a full-time yoga teacher. She has been doing yoga research since 2005. From 2007 she co-authored the Yoga for Healthy Lower Backs manuals for students and teachers. She has taught at BWY National Congress and is a BWY in Service Training Tutor on Yoga for Healthy Lower Backs. This is her sixth book. She has published research papers and many articles in yoga magazines.

Comprehensive, fascinating

After my migraines greatly escalated in frequency over the past year, I decided that it would be wise to get more information, hence the reading of this classic. First published in 1970, and revised in 1985 and 1992, Migraine contains a wealth of facts, case studies, ideas, and speculation relating to the complex, elusive phenomenon of migraine. Perhaps I should say 'phenomena', since no two migraines seem to be the same. Dr. Sacks has treated over 1000 migraineurs, and appears to have read and studied everything, ancient and modern, relating to migraine. I learned a tremendous amount about what afflicts me by reading this book, and I also unlearned some of what I thought I knew, such as that migraine aura is caused by a vasoconstriction, which is followed by a pain-producing vasodilatation (i.e. the discredited vasomotor theory of migraine). But, as with any good book written by an inspired, thoughtful author, Migraine is about much more than its principle subject. Dr. Sacks is so well read and so fundamentally curious and enthralled by the universe he finds himself in, that the reader cannot help but be sucked along in his jet stream, learning about such things as the visions of Hildegard of Bingen, Dostoyevsky's epileptic ecstasies, Novalis' dictum 'every disease is a musical problem; every cure a musical solution', as well as chaos theory and self-organising systems. I found the only weak chapter to be the one entitled 'Psychological Approaches to Migraine'. It would be better entitled 'Psycho-analytical Approaches to Migraine' since in it Dr. Sacks seems to accept and promote the most bizarre and outrageous of the unscientific ravings of the 'Viennese witch doctor'. Oh well.

The many case studies quoted in Migraine are illuminating, invaluable and make for fascinating reading. It is important for the migraineur, as well as for family and therapeutic practitioners, to realise that there is much more to migraine that just the pain of the headache. Dr. Sacks' description of the various sources of depression that can accompany migraine was particularly valuable to me. Depression may not only be in response to the pain, nausea and oppression of a headache, it can be an independent symptom that accompanies all of the other symptoms concurrently.

Although, for a non-medical person, Migraine can be tough sledding in parts, Dr. Sacks is a wonderful, elegant, and inspired writer. There is a very helpful and considerate glossary supplied, in addition to an excellent index. I found Migraine a joy to read and only hope that Dr. Sacks can find time in his busy life to grace us with a new updated edition.

Pictures of the mother of all headaches

I read this book a few years ago when my irregular migraine attacks had become more frequent. I had them from about age 15 until now, for the first decades maybe once or twice per year, then for a while more often, now less often and less severe. It took me decades to have a name for this thing at all. I have moved about so often that I never saw one medical doctor often enough to get so specific and scientific as to find names for afflictions.
I discovered this Sacks book on migraines when I read his Hat book. Sacks helped me to understand my problem. Most impressed was I by artistic renderings of the aura, which is the most scary phenomenon, as long as you don't know a name for it.
Understanding the problem does not do away with it, but you develop a rational attitude. I know now that it comes when it comes, that no special drug helps against it, that strong painkillers reduce the problem. I had some accupuncture treatments and now it still comes, but the individual attacks are milder, I can usually function like nearly normal as soon as the aura is over, which lasts rarely longer than half an hour. Formerly I would sometimes be out of action for a whole day.
I still hate noise and light like hell for hours afterwards.

Outdated and unscientific

I normally love Oliver Sacks, thoroughly enjoyed Musicophilia and The Man Who Mistook His Wife For a Hat. This book, however, is not really worth reading in 2016. It is outdated as the scientific understanding of migraine has simply advanced too much in the time since this book has been written. The chapters on the causes and treatments for migraine are so obsolete that it is of interest to nobody except medical historians. This book is also written in very dry language, more like a textbook for physicians than science writing for the public. Finally, and worst of all, this book devotes a large amount of space to the view that migraines are a purely psychological phenomenon that mainly happens to people who are overly neurotic and perfectionist. It even at one point suggests that people with migraines are subconsciously using them to escape from the responsibilities of life. Not only is this insulting to those who suffer, it has been utterly disproved and even several decades back it's sad to see an eminent doctor lend his support to such an unscientific view.

Exceptional series....Needs to be reprinted!!

This set is an incredible find for anyone looking for information on Tigran Petrosian. I snapped up a set here on amazon and the money was well spent. It's too bad that Pergamon Chess doesn't reprint this series, because anybody studying chess needs to study Petrosian's games, sooner or later. Both volumes combined have over 2100 games.

A Great Translation of an Often-Overlooked Work

Machiavelli is best known for his treatises on political action, most notably Il Principe. Most readers don't realize he was also a playwright, however, and an accomplished one. Mandragola is one of his best plays.
One of the themes that runs through all of Machiavelli's works is the art of the crafty assault, and it is present here in spades. His greatest respect is for the man behind the puppet, and in this case it is Ligurio. The plot has already been outlined in a previous review, so it will not be discussed here, but the primary purpose of the plot is to develop the intricate artifice that Ligurio uses to help his friend Callimaco.
The translation here is great also. At some points the translation interferes with the meter, but this is rare; most of the play flows along very naturally. The language is clear and easy to read, and yet Flaumenhaft, the translator, captures the essence of such difficult words as virtu, animo, and remedio without losing any of their meaning. Alternate meanings are often given in the footnotes.
This is an excellent play, and the translation more than holds up its end. For those who appreciate the use of strategem, want a more thorough understanding of Machiavelli, or simply want to read a great play, this is a wonderful book.

Machiavellianism in practice

The plot of this Renaissance play by Niccolo Machiavelli was quite adequately described by a previous reviewer, so I won't repeat the synopsis here. Suffice it to say that, for those who have read "The Prince," this play provided an illustration of the ideas presented in that treatise as they might work out in practice.

The central character of the play is Ligurio. Machiavelli characterizes him as a parasite, but here I think Machiavelli is being ironic. I think Ligurio is a stand-in for Machiavelli himself. He is the crafty plotter, the one who puts the entire scheme in action. Callimaco is the noble prince for whose benefit Ligurio plots. Nicia and Fra Timoteo represent, respectively, the gullibility and stupidity of the lawyer/political class and the corruption and venality of the clergy. (Remember, Machiavelli was writing at a time when the Reformation was just around the corner, precisely because of clergymen like Fra Timoteo.) Lucrezia might be characterized as the innocent who is not so innocent after all; she initially appears to be a young girl who is about to be used to satisfy a young man's lust, but she eventually consents to the scheme and finally agrees to take on Callimaco as her lover. The underlying ethos of the play is that the end justifies the means, that other people can be duped and used to satisfy someone's wants, and that in the end everyone benefits. Pure Machiavelli!

Witty, well-translated book. Deserves to be better known.

Most people know Niccolo Machiavelli, author of "The Prince (Il Principe)", as the infamous apostle of power politics. But in his own day, Machiavelli was celebrated for his witty, sometimes satirical, plays. Perhaps the most entertaining of these--"Mandragola" (1518)--is available in this very readable edition.
The protagonist is Callimaco, a libidinous young man who sets about to seduce Lucretia, the enchanting wife of a wealthy merchant. Callimaco fortuitously learns that the merchant has tried desperately to father a child, but to no avail. The clever Callimaco thereupon disguises himself as a physician and in this guise examines Lucretia, finding her even more alluring than he has dreamt. He deftly diagnoses her condition and prescribes a curious concoction that he must produce from the root of the mandrake plant--thus "mandragola"--to cure Lucretia of her affliction. If Lucretia drinks this potion, he declares, she will most certain! ! ly conceive a child.
The gullible merchant is overjoyed, until he hears that the potion has one very severe side-effect: The first man to join with Lucretia carnally after she has partaken of the drink will die from the potion's effects! The merchant, Nicias, understands immediately: On no account must he be the first to sleep with his wife after she has taken the potion. He knows what he must do: He must find another. He explains the predicament to his wife, and she (reluctantly?) agrees to go along with her hustband's plan.
As the reader might have guessed, the "physician" Callimaco informs Nicias that he just happens to know a young man who might consent to this indecent proposal. This man is, of course, Callimaco himself, who reappears in yet another disguise.
Machiavelli's mischief is deliciously entertaining. The characters are true, and the innuendos are still fresh 480 years after Mandragola was first published.

These are definately 2 good stories but..

Goats girls consists of two previously written weetzie bat books that are also published seperately and in dangerous angels. It consists of Witch baby and Cherokee bat and the goat guys. When I bought the book I was expecting two new weetzie bat stories, but if you haven't read them they are fantastic. Witch baby is about a little girl who has purple eyes and black hair, she feels like she doesnt belong and the story is about her and her life as she watches everyone. Cherokee bat and the Goat guys is also really good. Francesca has a really unique way of writing and her storys will capture your heart and your attention. But if you want to read these, I suggest just buying dangerous Angels, its got all 5 stories
